Help, Can't connect Hero to XP

I am trying to get my laptop to recognize my phone and nothing. I plug in the usb cable and HTC sync does not recognize my phone. Help please.

R you checking the notifications message in your hero when you connect your phone to your pc? I have a Mac and it doesn't just pop up when you connect the phone, I instead have to go to notification and click where it says connect thru USB or something like that...

I can mount the phone but not sync it through HTC Sync
