Dust in Screen?

Anyone else experienced the problem of dust under the front glass? Apparently there are a lot of new Sprint Hero's with this problem. I guess they didn't seal the glass to the lcd well enough. There are some people complaining in the sprintusers forum as well as on the main sprint forums. Sounds like it's no problem to exchange for a non-dusty one.

Mine has 5 or 6 specs of dust near the top right corner; only visible with the screen off and bright light source from the front. I am fearful that it will get worse over time so I'll probably be replacing it this week.

I have not had this issue, but thanks for the heads up and good luck getting a replacement. Let us know how it goes.

Re: Dust in Screen?

My issues didn't pop up until day 5 with my phone and the dust problem is hardly noticeable. Today I was reading the phone in bright sunlight and one of the specs glimmered. I thought it was on the screen at first but sure enough it's under the glass. I just know from past experience that once a little dust is in, it's highly likely to be annoying in a few short months.

I am on my third Hero. 1st had speaker issues. 2nd was the dust in the screen. I have found that with all three there was a gap on the bottom left between the control buttons and the screen which allows dust to get in. The solution I went with is to Ghost Armor the device and overlap the film in that area. Got mine at BB and they were cool with the exchange. They even let me keep the older battery and sd card. Love the device just found that I have been unhappy with how they are made rather then the functionality.

When you say speaker issues, are you referring to the speaker or the earpiece? I notice sometimes while on a call, it sounds a bit tinny, but not really tinny...almost like a rattle. I believe it to be the shutter from the camera and not anything defective with the earpiece. It hasn't gotten to the point where it's too annoying, so I was just curious if that was what you were seeing as well.

No dust issues here but that is really bad for a phone like Hero, it shouldn't be doing that at all. Let us know how your exchange goes. The sprint store rep should be able to do it for you asap as it is a major pain in the ***.

The speaker issue I was having was a static sound when I would make calls. I read how great the sound quality was so I knew it was the actual speaker was bad.

Re: Dust in Screen?

Well a guy at the sprint store said he could exchange it no problem today but they were all sold out of them. Should get an exchange tomorrow though. He had a Hero and said he hadn't heard of the problem but I know there have been many instances of dust under the screen and many more that have probably gone unnoticed. The guy told me I should have put a screen protector on it to prevent the dust from collecting. I didn't want to argue the physics of how and why the dust got under there so I just let him have that one.

Re: Dust in Screen?

Well I got my second replacement at the local sprint store today. Inspected the screen like a hawk while power was off and there was no dust. I went back to work and now there are 2 specs of dust near the upper left of the screen behind the glass. Nowhere near the amount of dust my traded in phone had but that phone too started out with just a few specs and over the course of a week that turned into dozens of specs. Can't imagine what that would look like in 2 years. I'll keep an eye on these 2 specs; if they multiply at all, this one is going back again. Sheesh... I've had 4 htc phones in the past and have never had this problem. I wonder if they are just unexperienced with the glass capacitive screens.

Can't believe there aren't more people on these forums with the same problem. I've always kept my phones with no case in my pocket. I mean, that's what they are designed for right?

Re: Dust in Screen?

Now the local sprint reps are saying that the defect I'm experiencing is cosmetic and therefore they won't replace my phone again. They said there's nothing they can do because t I work in a dusty environment..Haha. I reiterated that I've had 4 htc phones before which I carried in my pocket and never had the problem.

Yesterday I had no dust. Today I have two large particles near the top left of the screen (one looks like a hair and can be seen on white background) and two on the top right edge. I know this will continue to increase as it did the last time. That's 2 for 2 dusty phones.

I called HTC after talking to the sprint rep and he said that this is a known issue with phones coming from the factory and they are working on a solution. He couldn't tell me if this is covered under warranty or not but said he would be calling me back soon. I promptly called the sprint rep to let him know that this problem has been noted by HTC.

I would urge anyone with this problem to call or write the HTC support hotline (accessible from the support section at htc.com) so that this issue is fixed and not forgotten. If you haven't noticed dust in your screen yet, keep vigilant. Given the fact that I'm 2 for 2 and others have been 3 for 3, there's a very high probability that your phone may have the problem and it just hasn't happened yet.

Re: Dust in Screen?

I now have a bunch of dust specs under the glass. Majority are on the bottom left and upper right. I have til the 9th to decide if I want to return it. I may just swap it for a bb for the wife, then keep her upgrade available til this is fixed......unless cdma hero is rooted by then.(i miss internet sharing on winmo).....wtf htc, you left a big a$$ gap just inviting the dust in, c'mon

Has anybody else tried the dyson method?

I'm having the same issue I've already had a replacement. Went to the sprint store and there going to get me another one for the second time. They didn't have anymore in stock so i gotta go back tomorow. Some sprint reps I talk to say this a known issue some reps say "Every touch screen phone does that" To me thats a crock. I spoke with htc customer service and have a trouble ticket open for this. the rep said they are very aware of this issue and are going get back to me with a fix. So hopefully they will. SOMEHOW. I love this phone to much to give it up!!!!

I should take a photo of my Q9... there's more dust under the screen than in the desert (ok maybe not that much but still)

My first Hero did not have any dust issues, but the screen went screwy with 2 horizontal lines across it (see pic).

The replacement Hero is getting dusty, not super bad, but has some dust in the lower corners. Going to go back and exchange it again. Otherwise I love this phone!

I also seem to think the screen is different on the two I have had. Different in that the first one seemed to be recessed below the plastic bezel equally all the way around the screen, whereas the new "dusty" one the bottom corners are at least sitting flush with the plastic bezel.

Re: Dust in Screen?

Monday will mark one month with the phone, and no dust yet. And I've gotten all kinds of dust on the phone. Drywall dust, mdf dust, etc. I have a silicone sleeve for the body of the phone, but nothing protecting the screen. I got a good one...

I'm on my third Hero now as my first two got dust. This one looks better though as there is like no gap and it was manufactured 10/25/09 so hopefully they got it fixed by this batch of Hero's.

to get the Hero exchanged, did you guys have to insurance on the phone, or is it still covered under the 30 day?

Re: Dust in Screen?

Well I gave up on the Hero. Exchanged 3 phones at the Sprint store. The third time I exchanged they told me I couldn't exchange again and insisted that the dust issue is cosmetic. I pulled out my work blackberry which has been in the opposite pocket for the last year and showed them how it did not have any dust under the screen. They allowed me to trade for a Samsung moment. Have had that in my pocket for 2 days and no dust yet. I'm not expecting any dust for the life of this phone.

HTC has definitely fallen in the quality department. I've had 4 HTC phones in the past with no problems whatsoever, no exchanges required. All I can say is I'm glad I switched. The Moment is not quite as fancy as the Hero but it gets the job done smoother and faster. I'm enjoying not having to wait for the onscreen keyboard to catch up with my typing or for the screen to rotate when I flip the phone over. And its so nice not having to worry about the dust anymore.
