Soo rooting is supposedly so easy.
 
I have been trying for hours to root my htc hero and watching videos of easy ways to root and all this stuff. I am very Technically challenged and i have no idea how to make this work. I downloaded stuff it said to extract it places and stuff and im am so freakin frustrated and confused. Help me please.

check this out, its soo easy itll take 5 minutes.

Universal 1-Click root - xda-developers

just download the app and boom your rooted, then get rom manager from the market and flash a recovery, then a nandroid, and your good

here is some more information on rooting, as for flashing a recovery, after you download rom manager you can choose to keep the recovery that is installed with the app or an alternate(either is fine), in the main menu of the app it will say "reboot into recovery", select that and wait for the phone to restart, then choose backup and do a nandroid backup so that of something goes wrong you can fall back on that backup.

Did you downgrade from the upgrade? Thats an essential part, I believe the firmware version needs to end with a 5, not a 6. I was pulling my hair out until i noticed that

you can still root with firmware ending in .6, you just have to use the universal androot app located over at xda developers for free if your a member and then download rom manager and flash a recovery.

soooo i rooted and downloaded the Rom Manager, but it wont install the ClockworkMod

To use ROM manager, you can't use amonra recovery
