HTC Software update - 2.31.651.7 available
 

This morning my friend got a notification on her samsung moment, of a software update. So I tried to update my HTC software and it worked :)

"Overland Park, Kansas-based Sprint began rolling out maintenance update 2.31.651.7 for the HTC Hero in order to fix a couple of known issues affecting the internal GPS and dialer. Unfortunately, it’s not Android 2.2 [Froyo]. As many of you might have learned already, Sprint indicated back in June via a tweet that the HTC Hero will not be upgraded to Android 2.2 [Froyo]. Anyway, many are already seeing a different after updating the software. Folks report that the dialer now comes up in mere seconds rather than minutes, as it used to. Those who have not yet received the update, should try pulling it by going to Settings > System Updates > HTC software update."

I'm in California and I got the OTA update message on my phone today.
Do I have to backup all my contact/sms before using this update?
Will it clear everything?
