cellular south htc hero
i have never had this much trouble getting a custom rom on a damn phone
i am at my wits end with this thing and would appreciate any and all help

Took about 10 minutes. Even my wife rooted her phone following this guide and she's not phone savy at ALL.

There a numerous ways to gain root, and they are all very easy. XDA has a very simple root process that doesn't involve the Android SDK, or you can use FlipzMode's kitchen and root your phone. It is very simple, just read the different how to's, chose the one that works for you and try it.

and what happens when the official 2.1 comes out......can you just upgrade or do you have to do something like re-boot to stock before upgrading again????

You will probably have to flash to stock if you want to go with the Official 2.1.

I cant even flash to an unofficial 2.1..............i'll just wait.
