A Google Maps Question

So, first off, I am in love with Google Maps. I know we don't get the awesome looking Google Navigation, but I find my Google Maps app is more accurate and easier to use than Sprint Navigation, and I let it handle all my GPS needs.

Now, here is my question. I seem to remember, when using Gmaps from my Touch Pro, that if i did a My Location, the app would keep the map centered around my Blue Location Dot. On my Hero, I have to move the map manually, which I don't like doing while I drive.

Is there a way to get this effect on the Hero? Am I missing something simple?

If you hit menu and tap my location, it will follow you until you hit a button or touch the screen. I think. You're making me doubt myself now :)

That is correct, but get rooted and run one of the 2.1 Roms and get Google navigation. It's SO worth it!

Re: A Google Maps Question

Well, when I do Menu->My Location it centers around my dot, but the map still doesn't follow, I find myself looking down to the dot on one end of the map. I figured that should do it because that's the way it always used to work for me.

So it seems just MY Hero doesn't work right haha. I am rooted running Fresh 1.1, but far as I remember the stock ROM with the stock Gmaps app didn't work for me either.

I've been to lazy to flash over a new ROM but I guess in light of this issue being just with me, I'll have to get on the latest Damage ROM. I'm just leary about not being able to handle MMS with Handcent but oh well.

Connected with GPS. Ive tried this multiple times, and I was always thinking doing My Location should do the trick but it never has.

I dont know what maps you used to run before your hero but I have never had maps follow my dot. And I am talking about on my Diamond.

Re: A Google Maps Question

The Google Maps I used on my HTC Touch Pro definitely had this feature where it would keep the map centered on your blue dot. If you clicked on one of the directions change icons or anything else on the map it would stop and you would have to do a My Location again.

Im almost positive that this feature worked with the Google Maps I downloaded when I got my Touch Pro (about a half a year after release), but I know for sure that w/e version came with the latest Mighty ROM did this.

I second that. I used it yesterday for the first time and I'm in love. It is awesome, very accurate, simple but yet very effective. And it has voice directions...

I think what I like best about it is that it is pretty accurate to your location. I used tom tom on my Diamond and I found that when I pulled up to a stop sign, the arrow was a bit behind. Google nav seems to be right on where my vehicle is on the road. I love it.

I miss that feature too! I remember the my location dot would progress with you as you drive to your destination. Now it doesn't, not liking that! :-(

I have confirmed that it, in fact, DOES follow you when you move. If it didn't i would probably still be in Alton, IL right now.

Re: A Google Maps Question

Y'know, being out on the road today, I found that it no longer did that for me, either. Unless it was because I didn't tap somewhere on the map to have it stop focusing on the next direction.

And, it would always go into Sleep Mode if I didn't touch it. I could've sworn it stayed lit when giving directions.

Yeah the sleep mode thing happens to me, but it definitely follows my dot.

This is exactly why I like Google over Sprint Navigation or Garmin that I had on my Touch Pro. It is waaay more accurate.

I have found that the i can fix the problem with the map not following the Location Dot pretty simply: It works only if I open the Google Maps app, go home and turn on my GPS, then go back to Google Maps. If I activate GPS prior to opening the App, then I get the problem.

Hope that helps someone out. Ill be switching over to Damage when I find time next week.
