Kernel vs. ROM ?
Help the n00b please!
I'm new here from the Touch Pro threads. On WinMo devices we only had to flash ROM's, maybe a radio. I don't understand this talk about kernels. Can anybody explain the difference between a ROM and a kernel? Are they interchangeable? For example, I've flashed Modaco's recent cdma ROM....but did that install his kernel as well? How do I know what kernel I'm running? Can I use the modaco ROM w/ the Gumbo kernel? etc. |

Awesome! Thanks!
Now, I get the difference, but when I flash a ROM does it also flash a kernel? Can I mix and match ROM's and kernels? |

hey bro i understand ya! sometimes with so many threads being opened its like damn i cant read all of this... so im the type ill just ask a questions if i cant find it easily.
btw... if you go to settings-> about phone scroll down you will see what kind of kernel you are running ;) and welcome to the droid team :) |
Re: Kernel vs. ROM ?
The rom is packaged with a kernel. You can flash a kernel without a rom, but the rom will always flash a kernel.
Kind of like my friend and his gf. Sometimes you see her out doing things without him, but it seems every time I see my weak sauce buddy he's with her. |
