Few questions before I buy a Hero

I am a long time Diamond user/flasher. I even build and publish custom roms for the diamond, so going to the Hero would be. I have a few questions before I choose to go android all the way.

1. In general is it wirth it out of the box? Basically if I dont customize the hero or flash it or whatever then is it still better than the diamond or wm?

2. Can someone give me a brief overview of what "booting" is and what that does? Is it like unlocking it for flashing?

3. How does flashing Hero/Android compare to flashing diamond/WM

1. I know you know me and have had discussions on the Diamond forum. Out of the box, the hero is leaps and bounds so much better than the diamond. For once you can keep your phone on and not have to reboot to fix lock ups and hangs. You will be impressed with the feel and look.

2. Its actually called "rooting" and it is the equivalent of unlocking on the diamond. Allows you to remove sprint bloatware and flash custom roms as well as many other features.

3. Flashing on the Hero is great. For the most part, you dont have to hard reset every time you want to flash a new rom. Some recommend a wipe before flashing because of new kernels and such but if you just flash custom rom on top of another without wiping, guess what, you dont have to reinstall all of your APPS!! They are still installed.

Sprint always gives a 30 day return period. Buy it, Try it and if you dont like it, Take it back, no harm no foul.

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback! I did wonder what happened to you in the Diamond forums but I figured you had moved on to greener robots, I mean pastures:mrgreen:

One more question, Are there already 2.1 custom ROMs to flash to? I'll be getting the Hero from Cellular South and I believe it's on 1.5 or 1.6 and knowing them it'll be forever before they offer a 2.1 upgrade.

Yeah, I went and played with one at Best Buy and after all my reading, I just saw a future with android. Granted this wont be my last phone for a while, I know that things are much brighter and not such a pain in the butt. Lol. If you make the leap, hit me up if you need help with rooting.

Imagine having a phone that never locks up. That doesn't get hot enough to cook an egg. That has a browser 10 times better then opera. That has real email NO FREAKING SIDE SCROLLING. That has a truly finger friendly screen. I use my Touch Pro now and then to keep up with things in the WM world and it just feels like I'm using it with swollen thumbs.

I do sometimes miss the thrill of cooking flashing and relentless tweaks. But you still do all this with the hero, the thing is you do really have to for an enjoyable experience.

When I had my diamond, it was quite honestly an addiction. Like a crack head twitching for his next fix, i was twitching for my next flash. Why? Because of the law of dimenishing returns. I would flash/smoke crack, get the feeling the thing was flying as fast as a nexus 1 and then BAM! My high would wear off and I would realize that in fact, it hadnt gotten better at all and that I was fooled by the feeling of my first time flashing. Went to the Hero. Guess what? I was dissappointed at first that I wasnt flashing/smoking crack as often as I was with my diamond. My first impression, WTH, THIS PHONE WORKS...IM PISSED!!! I eventually listened to myself, performed a personal intervention and realized, Wow, I love this phone.

LOL! YES! I know exactly what you are both talking about! It'll be nice for my wife to see me not glued to a virtual kitchen for a change... of course this means I may wind up in the real kitchen more often.#-o

I ordered it online this afternoon. It should be here by Monday. I actually went to the store but Cell South wanted to make me turn in my Diamond in order to upgrade!:protest: So I politely said that they were crazy if they thought I was just going to GIVE them a phone I paid $400 for only a year ago. For whatever reason ordering online and shipping to your house doesnt require a phone trade.

You made the right decision. Prepare for your Diamond to be holding documents on a table for the rest of its existence.

Ha, I hope to keep using it just for flash testing as my wife still has a diamond and I dont want to abandon the folks using my roms. BTW if apps cant be stored on the storage card, then what exactly does get stored on there beside pics and ringtones? Just wondering if 2gigs is enough

A lot of programs place their caches on the sdcard. After rooting, you can partition the sdcard and enable the apps to be stored there. Be prepared for culture shock; The way android handles app installation and management makes SENSE if you can believe it.

Just an update, I got my Hero in yesterday and i'm loving it! Anyone know a good alarm app thats reliable or how to make the screen go off when you answer a call? Just a couple things out of the box that I'm not 100% happy with.

Klaxon is the best alarm app IMHO. He came from WinMo like us.

Proximity is a good app for making the screen go off when its up to your face.

Sweet thanks! Now if I could just speed read through all this stuff about rooting, Flashing, kernals & pre-kitchens I'd be great, lol.

Get the pre-kitchen and use that to root. Its simple. Follow instructions. Then you can read through rom threads and pick your favorite. Gumbo is a great Kernel IMHO because it is a huge performance increase along with battery saver. I had SMS trouble, but I seem to be the only one? Its easy to learn, about the same as flashing wm from SD card, except no hard resets.

On androidcentral.com Ghbil has a downright sexy Android Developer faq. I covers everything from "what the hell is android?" to "How make stuff for it?". I'll post a link here at some point today.

Re: Few questions before I buy a Hero

So, apparently the pre-kitchen wont work for my hero because it's not a sprint phone. I found a root process for non sprint phones but it's pretty complicated and you lose everything and there's no way to go back to the stock once you do it.

I guess Ill just have to wait till non sprint users get a little more love.

Go through it and load the recovery. Then do a nandroid backup right there. You will be stock except rooted. No one will know any difference.

Then start putting roms on it.

Will nandroid backup restore everything? I havent looked at it yet. This is the root process I'm looking at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581869
