How do I backup & RESTORE just text messages?

I REALLY want to just keep my text messages and do a vanilla install. I have sms backup which is archiving them to gmail. But I really need the text history with some of my friends and clients to search through sometimes.

Is there a way to backup the text messages that will let me restore them perfectly after a vanilla install?

Second, is there any service that does this universally, like across a winmo mogul, android hero, and apple iphone?

This is the hero forum. If you had a hero, you could try Fresh Pre Kitchen.

hey thanks gangmobb, yes I have an active hero, but I also have a mogul and an iphone with messages on them.

It's simply easier to glance through my old text history when i get a text, or search through it if I need too. Sometimes I get a text on a follow up with a client and have to check the history to see where we left off a month ago or i'm lost.

On winmo is was as easy as pim backup / restore on each new phone and i was able to keep my 2000 or so texts perfectly in tact. I really don't want to bother with a kitchen just to transfer texts any time I want to try a new rom from a reformatted state or any time I change android devices. (much more often than you think.)

Google Voice is the answer to your problem. It will be a universal text message setup. Forward Texts to all 3 phones or have a google voice app in all, except iPhone which has an html5 setup now from my knowledge (which was called lacking). If you use Google voice though they will all be together. May not help in getting them backed up, but from now on they will be right there for you.

Rockin! I had not even thought of using the text aspect of gv for this. I'll look into it more and report back if it suits me. You may have actually found me a total solution if that's the case. :headbang:

Alternatively, for just your Hero, apps like My Backup will allow you to backup and reinstall SMS and MMS messages on your phone.

However I am trying to also Find a way to go between phones, such as backup all texts on android, and restore to iphone or blackberry.

I finally signed up for google voice
my number is 650-SEEMEGO
I tried forwarding my OLD texts through it but for now it doesn't retain the original sender. However I think it May work for all my new text messages if I route them all through google voice.

I'm checking out http://www.treasuremytext.com/ apps to see if they work that way.
