That is the latest firmware, you are doing something wrong. It took me all day to finally root my hero. Talk to Athletic1 and if he has time, he may ne able to help. I suck at it, sorry

thanks a lot, i had been working with flipz all morning to get his working, but a no go. i tried to do this and it went great. super easy. thanks a lot, thanks for all ur help flipz, i guess since im rooted now i cant help you get yours working now, the only thing i did different from this way, is that i used fresh rom instead of the modaco one the OP used. now i guess i gotta see what the fuss of being rooted is all about and how great this rom is.

yep........did these steps......
Ok, lets do this in steps, should make it easier:

Step 1: Mount the sd card and place all the files downloaded onto the root of the sdcard.

Step 2: Download some sort of file manager, ex Estrongs File Manager, and run/open the flashrec apk.

Step 3: Once it's finished installing, unplug the usb cable, run the app, and hit the button, "backup recovery image". If you get an error, try rebooting your phone, make sure the usb cable is unplugged.

Step 4: Exit app, and mount the sd card again, and move recovery-backup.img to your desktop, then rename recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img to recovery-backup.img

Step 5: Unmount sdcard, unplug usb cable, and go back into the flashrec app(should be named recovery flasher in all programs list)

Step 6: hit restore backup image. Once finished flashing, power down phone.

Step 7: After you power down your phone, hold the Vol Down button, then hold down the power button. Phone should boot into hboot. Press home for recovery.

Step 8: To ensure you have a backup of your phone before we continue, do a nandroid v2.2 backup.

Step 9: After the nandroid backup is complete, you can now choose apply "sd card update choose", and choose the modaco or damage control rom

Step 10: Reboot your phone and you should be all set.

STILL GET STUCK AT STEP 7............i boot up and I get an exclamation with phone ICON.....and no one seems to help from that point......I QUIT I QUIT I QUIT.

If this is giving you such a tough time, why not try Fresh's Kitchen and just use the auto-rooter feature? Personally I haven't used it, but from what everyone says, and what Fresh has said it is wonderful and I can tell you it's easy to use, the entire kitchen is actually.

NAAA i give up. you guys are really good at the tech but someone somewhere is leaving out some bit of information each time.......

ex......someone told me to rename the flashrec to include the apk instead of img. That was never mentioned anywhere else.

Carla 04-13-2010 06:36 PM

Re: root new firmware

No, you don't do that. You just rename recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img to recovery-backup.img, I am on Win7 so I don't have to add the .img since it knows it is an .img file already. I understand you are frustrated, but those directions are exactly how you get it done, nothing is left out. The directions I PM'ed you even had little notes to clarify certain things for you. Like I said, if that just won't do it the Kitchen is the easiest way. If you still don't want to do it that is more then cool, we are all just trying to help you succeed :)

Re: root new firmware

im talking about the flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.zip..............i have to chage the to apk in order for it to work.

Thanks for the replies but like the rest..............you are just passing me off to another headache.

Carla 04-13-2010 06:53 PM

Re: root new firmware

You aren't supposed to change it to .apk, you are just supposed to download the files that the directions say, and then use a file explorer to open that file. I am not trying to pass you on to another issue. Best of luck then.

ARghhhh..... if I put the flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.zip AS IS in my SD card slot nothing happens when I click on it.....it just shows me a sub-directory. If I change the zip to apk like some other "expert" told me to do i get to step 7.............so tell me now, what am i doing wrong?

it's a program that can open pretty much any archive file ever.
download it and use it to extract the .img folder from inside the .zip folder (or I guess you could just use WinZip but I'm partial to WinRar)

Thanks but I tried something before and I ended up clearning my whole phone. Something tells me I should wait till friday for the 2.1 firmware upgrade.

Yeah naturally the switch to 2.1 would require a whole wipe :-|

Re: root new firmware

Just rooted earlier this week.

Make sure you have the hero drivers installed on your computer. I installed the latest version of HTC Sync on my Win7 64 bit laptop.

I used the Fresh Kitchen 1.0.5 to auto root. The phone should do some stuff, and reboot.

From there, I powered off the phone, and then I held down home, and power. I was put into a menu, where I selected Nandroid > Nandroid Backup > Backup (can't remember the exact menu setting, but you only have a few options in the menu, and it's related to backup/restore).

I powered my phone back up, and put the rom I wanted to install on the root of the SD card. I did another power down. Hold down home and power, and I did a wipe of the phone (I didn't do this at first, and my phone was stuck in the HTC boot screen....thought I'd bricked my phone). After the wipe, I selected the option to load zip from SD card. Follow the onscreen instructions (of which there are very few...I think you just press Home to confirm), and when your phone comes back up, you should be good to go.

I didn't mess with the FlashRec.apk file. I didn't find it necessary.
