Installing Apps on SD

Anyone found a way to do it? Limited space internally...32 GB's of freedom externally

Re: Installing Apps on SD

Android will not by default install apps on a sd card, you can however root the phone and install a sd card formatted with ext2 (as android is linux based), Found this post over at xda in the Dream forum explaining how to do it.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462882

I assume it would be the same for the Hero.. Looks complicated but might be worth a shot..

thacounty 12-08-2009 10:12 AM

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.5; en-us; A6277 Build/CUPCAKE) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Mobile Safari/525.20.1)

Stock on fresh Rom. Need 2 partition fat32 and ext2.

Boot in to your recovery menu (green and black screen) in whatever way you like.

Choose "format sd fat32 + swap + ext2" off the menu. (Note: this will format your sd card so back it up first!)
Choose ext2 to ext3 conversion off the menu.
Install fresh rom
You are now running apps2sd

However unless you plan on installing 100+ apps, you should have no real need for it on the hero. Removing your sd card will break everything. This is a month old post from when I first integrated it, but it still applies: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...88&postcount=2

Let me know if you have any questions.

Well I was just curious, not really wanting to do it...just seeing if there was a way

anyone really use apps2sd then?
cause it looks like a big hassle if you unmount the SD card from your phone, then you have to install all the programs again...

So lets say I format my card after I have installed like 30 apps. What can i do to be sure my future apps are going to the card and not the phone, and if I uninstall and reinstall the apps on my phone, will they go to the card?

Format doesn't remove the apps.

If you have A2SD2 all apps go to sd card.

Seems like the same question so I have the same answer. The only way to stop them from going to card is to remove Ext2 partition.

I think you misunderstood my questions. The fresh rom supposedly has apps2sd by default correct?

So I have my card installed, only fat32. I install 30 apps. At that point, I do the format on the card because i want to start using the SD card. Obviously the existing Apps are still installed on the phone.

Now since apps2sd is on the rom by default, after formating the card, i would assume the following:

1. That future apps would install to the card. How would I verify this?
2. That if I uninstall, and reinstall an app, that would go to the SD card. Is this true?

All apps will install on the SD card if you partitioned it to be Fat32, Ext2. What this means is there are 2 storage cards(the phone thinks) One for apps and one "you can use". You can use your SD card whether you format it or not.

If you partition the card Fat32, Ext2 then all your apps will be on the SD card. You don't have to uninstall and reinstall it, they will move from the phone and go there. Look in my tips thread, there is a link there that tells how to see if your apps moved to the SD card.

Re: Installing Apps on SD

One of the questions asked when showing off the Nexus One was whether they would allow Apps to SD, and Google said it was in the works! Seems they will make piracy harder than it is currently, which NEEDED to be addressed IMHO, but after that they should have a solution for us. I am very happy to see this! I am now switching to A2SD2 since I have some big games installed and I got a low memory message. Crap. So hopefully it goes as smooth as the first time haha.

So, got apps on sd with no swap, but my voicemail got deleted in the mix!! Oh crap! I found an APK on xda that seems to work great! Haha, I had to reinstall all my apps and voicemail was gone! Reason they got deleted was I repartitioned to zero my swap. Anyway, no one cares, heres the link. Unzip and install as usual apk.

Re: Installing Apps on SD

It means that it is creating a section on your memory card for your apps to install too. Its like creating a virtual memory card on your current card. Allocating space that are seperate from each other.

Re: Installing Apps on SD

This is one reason why i like how the iphone/Palm Pre has it set up. sure you can't expand your storage, 8-16 gigs is usually enough and you don't have to worry about running out of space for apps. I think Android should requires at least 1gb of space on the phone for installing apps to. 1gb of storage should be plenty.

Anyways, now that my rant is over. if I use Apps2sd and get a new SD card, will i have to reinstal everything, or will i be able to back them up?

I think the problem is that we can natively put Apps on the SD card. When we can do that there will be no reason for needing internal memory. I agree that we need about 1gb/1gb rom ram, but I don't think it should have to be used for apps.

You need to back up all your stuff from the sd card then partition. Reboot phone and it will put all apps on sd, no need for you to redownload them, and put all your stuff back on it.

That's one thing that I miss from the WM phones. You can't choose where you would like apps to be installed.

I'm trying to run iGO but i'm out of memory on my phone.. :( I can't install it..

so Iwhat i've gathered from this thread are mostly disavantages of using apps to sd. If you use less than 100 apps, then there doesn't seem to be a need to do this. Are there any REALLY significant advantages?

More space on your phone. I had a few big apps and I actually have less than 100, but I ran into low memory problems so I went a2sd2.

It is an option on a recovery image to make the partition ext4 but that is not the same recovery as the 1.6.2 won't do it. Look on geekfor.me its prob there.

Yeah that was going to be my next spot to look, since his rom seems to be the only one using ext4
