lol at this extended battery

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=350336758496
like no...just no! $40 for 1800mah?

I complained to them since leading up to that the best extended I found (mind you I'm looking for one that will still fit under the standard battery cover) was a 1700mah for only $10.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I messaged them and said I'd buy the 1800mah for $15, but any higher than that is preposterous and I'll be giving good ol' china some business :angry7:

Let us know how that works out I'd be interested in one for $15

Re: lol at this extended battery

Those mAh ratings are basically made up. The "1800 mAh" won't last any longer than the "1700 mAh" one. Actually, it might, because it's Mugen and I hear they may use high quality materials, but that might be just the perceived value effect.

Anyway, the point is that the mAh ratings of these batteries are essentially meaningless. The only way to know which will last longer is to do an actual test.

Idk what else one could really go on to figure out the battery's capacity
I mean the voltage can't change so the mAhs are the only variable really.
As for it being a Mugen and therefore "must" contain high quality parts....well I'd hope so since Mugen batteries are always obnoxiously overpriced :disgust:.

I was wondering though, is there a way I could check the mAh myself when I get the battery?? like with a multimeter or something?

In short, no. mAh is a performance metric, not an electrical metric like voltage.

It's sort of like, for the inevitable car analogy, horsepower on a car. Imagine a car industry where no one regulated how manufacturers rated their engines for power output and no one ever cared enough to actually test a car for power output. You'd have manufacturers pumping nitro into the engines to get stupidly inflated measurements, you'd have manufacturers measuring HP at the crank instead of at the wheels, and you'd have manufacturers simply making numbers up to be "one better" than the competition. No one would ever really know, since no one ever does any actual independent tests (who cares enough to set up any sort of valid scientific test for a bunch of $10 eBay batteries?).

mAh ratings are, as I said, performance metrics. There are lots of ways to measure the performance of a battery. There are so many variables that have a huge influence on the final "rating," such as temperature and current. A given battery will measure a vastly different mAh rating when putting out 200 mA at 75 degrees than it will putting out 2000 mA at 15 degrees.

And that's assuming they do any measurements at all. Do you really think the generic, no-name battery manufacturer in China shipping out batteries to the US via eBay for $10 a pop for 100 different phones is really setting up and doing valid, honest tests of these batteries for performance? Of course not. They're assembling the batteries to the approximate size and voltage of stock and then slapping them with a performance number that's one higher than the other guys so they sell a few more.

These are the same guys who, under contract to a US manufacturer, paint children's toys with leaded paint to save 2 cents per unit and hope no one finds out or else the large US manufacturer will cancel the contract. Imagine what they do with stuff they're selling direct to consumers through eBay.

Re: lol at this extended battery

Interesting, that does make sense. It sucks that I cant check the battery's specs scientifically. I'd have to see if I notice the ~13% increase I should be having I guess (or 20% if I got the 1800mAh)

jonnythan 04-06-2010 02:16 PM

Re: lol at this extended battery

Well, you can, just not very easily. One of the easier ways would be to turn the phone's radios off and disable all background services, set it to a certain brightness, let it fully charge, then play a video in a loop until it dies. Repeat this 3 times for each battery and measure the time.

Another way would be with a special battery charger that has a discharging function. There are some fairly fancy universal li-ion battery chargers that will charge your battery and then do a full discharge, complete with measured mAh rating (it calculates this based on current draw and time).

Of course, neither of these tests will exactly correlate to real-world usage but they can potentially give you a good idea of how various batteries stack up against each other.

Re: lol at this extended battery

Yeah, I guess I'd just have to see (hopefully outside of the placebo effect) whether or not my battery life seems to have improved.

I'd love one of those charge/discharge testing units, but seeing has I am too cheap for the $30 price hike on the battery, chances are high that I am too cheap to buy that unit. (unless it was a universal unit).

Hopefully I'll hear back from the Mugen guys soon, or I'll just pull the trigger on the "1700mah"unit

Re: lol at this extended battery

If you don't mind the additional size, go with the seidio 3500 battery.

http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wire...mpaign=froogle

This battery easily lasts me 2 days between charges with my normal usage. Heavy users would easily get more than a day out of this. The only complaints are the volume rocker is harder to adjust, and the back cover will sometimes pop off. But this battery is definitely lasting much longer than the stock one.

this is what they said to me:
Quote:

Dear iviyth0s,

Apples and oranges. This is high quality Mugen brand. This is better than oem battery and less extensive.
thanks,
ncp

Who's to say the other brand isn't high quality??

I feel compelled to summon all the equipment necessary to challenge their claim, maybe the other one is a dud but justifying the cost because Sprint's price is too high doesn't suddenly make it ok.
And if the other company is high quality (as it also claims) than everyone wins by not patronizing the mugen sellers

i paid $20 shipped for a decent 2000mAh one from ebay. took 3 weeks to get here from china but it's a bit better than the stock battery.

Yup, I bought one of those too for $10 w/free shipping on ebay. I'm getting around an extra 4 hours out of it compared to the stock battery with no extra bulk added to the phone.

I'm assuming that one doesn't require a different cover too?

Just buy the ebay 2000 mah battery. you won't get the mugen for $15. That guy didn't pay less than $15 for the mugen. If he's selling it cheaper than you can find mugen batteries eleswhere, than you are getting a deal. No point to harass an ebay seller just because....

I'm not harassing the guy just to do so, there's just no reason that he, and more importantly Mugen should charge what they do for what little more they're offering

Edit: I've found it, it goes under the name of Touch Pro 2 battery (since our phones have the same battery form factor)
More about it here:

The reason he is charging that price is because that is what Mugen charges. The little guy on ebay is at the mercy of the big guy at Mugen. I just think you are going after the wrong person.

I have one of those andida batteries. For me, it was a toss up whether it lasted longer than the stock battery. For $10, it's a great battery to have as your primary/backup/etc. But with my usage, which would be considered medium compared to most people here, I wasn't lasting the entire day, or really much longer than the stock Hero battery. I decided I needed a true extended battery. The seidio 1750 mah was just a few bucks cheaper than the 3500 mah. For me, it was a no-brainer. Now, I can use the phone as much as I want, with all the goodies turned up to the max, and not have to charge my phone for 2 days. It's not any less pocketable.

Sorry if I wasn't clear...the 3500 was my choice. I didn't see the value in the 1750, when the 3500 was just a few bucks more.

I figured so, I'm not ready to make this thing my permanent tank...as much as I love it. I wont get a battery like that until I get an Evo 4G equivalent with a physical keyboard.

Dude nakedcellphone is a great ebay seller. i bought all my mugen extended batteries from him.. and that price is very good..and inline for a mugen batt. go ahead and pay 10 bucks for a noname.. and risk it.. but nakedcellphone never has a issue with them.. great shipping etc.. I only use mugen or seidio batts. more expensive.. but better quality..and if they are faulty very easy to return....

by the way u can get that mugen batt for 37 bucks from mugen..

iviyth0s 04-14-2010 08:37 PM

Re: lol at this extended battery

from what I keep hearing this battery is just as good if not better than the mugen battery (obviously not the behemoth one) and $37 is just sick for what little you're getting over stock (mugen 1800mah). Just because Andida isn't a largely known company over here doesn't mean it's any worse than Mugen.

I'll tell you all how it ends up when I get the battery and after a few charge cycles.
Until then I'm zipping my lips haha

iviyth0s 04-28-2010 11:43 PM

Re: lol at this extended battery

*Update and Review*

Well I got it and have done a few charge cycles so it should be at full performance.
It's an odd battery to say the least, still worth the money!

For one thing when it's being stressed, the battery goes down noticeably slower than the stock battery but it lasts about the same throughout the day as the old one. (Unless I've adjusted my usage accordingly).

It seems to charge faster than the stock battery (which doesn't really make sense). I'm happy with it though, I'd give it an 8/10 only because the "25%" increase in storage capacity wasn't across the board but still an awesome battery for $10. If I didn't have a stock battery, I'd pick up one of those $5 1500mah and review them but I'm more than satisfied with this battery and my backup stocker.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a modest battery life improvement at an easy to swallow price (and also no special hunchback of notré dame battery covers needed)

Remember when looking in ebay the keywords necessary to find it are "TP2 2000mah", for the Hero and Touch Pro 2 batteries have an identical battery form factor. The battery is from a company called Andida

Edit: here's some discussion of the 1800mah Mugen vs the 2000mah Andida at XDA too
Sounds like the Mugen is a turd for the most part, sounds like throwing money at something isn't always the answer ;)

Quote:

Hey folks. Pardon my intruding to plug my thread even though it's not even for the Hero but I would advise you to keep your distance from Mugen and instead just stick to the OEMs. If it's a capacity claim and it's being made by Mugen then it's a pretty big exaggeration you're overpaying for. Don't help keep them in business.

I've tested two Mugen 1800s for the Touch Pro2/Rhodium and neither of them clocked in more milliamp hours than the 1500-rated oem. A $5 counterfeit actually tied the second one they sent me. This picture speaks for itself.

Doug
^good read

http://batteryboss.org/ <-- breaks down a large number of android phone batteries
It actually revealed the Andida to be quite bad, though still a FAR better deal than the stupid mugen

Well despite my own review, I'm going to ignore the placebo effect and trust science in making my decision to make the andida the backup battery and my stocker the primary. Those ~$5 1500mahs didn't do too bad though
