Brief flash guide
 

Some members are asking in various threads how to update to the latest rooted ota. Just wanted to provide a brief guide so it's in one thread instead of posting this is multiple threads. Hope this is of value guys. *This is for rooted users of course :)

• Do a nandroid backup (A must!) before flashing a new rom just in case. Enter recovery/backup & restore/nandroid backup/ backup up boot, system, data, and wimax/perform backup.
• Download one of the rooted OTA releases. Here is the one on our site: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/cdma-htc-evo-4g-development/144214-new-stock-gingerbread-rom-4-22-651-2-6-3-2011-rooted-either-odexed-deodexed.html Select odex for pure stock, deodexed for a themable rooted ota. Put the file on the root of your sd card.
• If you want to backup your apps and settings etc, do this before performing a full wipe. There are many apps available that can perform the backup (Titanium Backup, Superbox, etc).
• Go into recovery again, Recovery/Wipe/wipe All user data/factory reset, Cache, Dalvik cache. While still in recovery, flash the ota rom you saved to the sd. (recovery/flash zip from sd card/choose zip from sdcard/and find the zip you saved to flash) Reboot.
• Give it time to setup, should take a bit of time especially on the deodexed rom.
• Once you're up and running, you can flash the updated firmware if you choose. Just wipe cache and dalvik, not data. It’s not required. However the latest firmware will update your radio, pri, etc so it’s probably beneficial. There are a couple firmware updates available; the first is in the thread I linked above. You can flash this through hboot/fast recovery. Basically by powering down the device, holding the volume down button and power at the same time to enter bootloader. The file will be recognized and ask you to flash it. OR you can flash Calk’s all in one zip through recovery (same as flashing the rom) I did it this way with zero issues. It will ask you to reboot at which time it will flash the radio update so be patient.

Couple additional notes:



*I use amon recovery 2.3. I am sure clockwork recovery would be similiar but I cannot say one way or the other. I'm just mentioning this since I can only vouch for my experience with amon.
**Some have asked if they should unroot their device to update. Personally I would not unroot to just go back to a rooted status after updating. You will have to wait for another root solution if you unroot and update. So its best to just flash the rooted version.
***I used quickboot to easily enter recovery. You can also enter recovery by powering down, holding the volume button down and power button. Hold the volume button down for a few more seconds. Once in bootloader, select recovery.

Can you give a little more insruction on how to update the firmware? I have tried both methods and can't get it to update.

What recovery are you using? I am not sure why it is not working for you. I used Calk's "all in one zip", placed it on the root of the sd card. wiped cache and dalvk, flashed it. It was very brief, asked me to reboot at which time it flashed the radio image. Wait for this to run and reboot once it's completed and done. Keep in mind its not required to do the radio update.

I used Quick Boot to get into recovery.Then I flashed it from my SD card.The file opens and then aborts and the sysem reboots.The file I am using is called Combo on the link you supplied. I did not see one called "All in one". Am I using the wrong file?

I have no idea.Whatever recovery that quick boot takes me to.

Ok, I am little concerned that you don't know the recovery you are using and flashing the radio image. You should be able to see what recovery you are using while in recovery (bottom of the screen should say Build: RA-supersonic-2.3 if you have amon recovery installed). You may want to hold off on it for now to be honest. You can just use the existing firmware if everything is working. I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it :) Do a little research on this first to become more familiar with the flashing process. I just dont want you to mess up your device if that makes sense.

Thanks for your help.I was using clockwork.I switched to amon and it worked on the first try.

I knew I had clockwork but did not understand that was what you were asking.I did not know how to switch into amon from Rom manager,so your PM was very helpful.

[question] It's been I while since I was rooted, but doesn't rom manager do an all in one for you? I do recall you can go into rom manager and select install zip. you could also flash either CW or Ra recovery thru there. you can also incude many zips, like if you were flashing something like CM and you wanted gapps and a custom boot animation, you could select them all and then start. It would reboot into recovery and install everything and restart phone after flash.
