No as of now Sprint is not switching to LTE. Sprint is working on releasing phones with a three chipset that will allow you to switch from CDMA to WIMAX to iDEN seamlessly. This is also making them change all their towers from hardware to software that will support all three of these together in one tower. Right now they have a seperate tower for CDMA/WIMAX and separate tower for iDEN. This is also going to make coverage a lot stronger.

EVO will likely never get LTE.
LTE on Sprint will likely follow the likes of Verizon.
On Verizon, LTE uses a sim card. On the EVO, there is
no place to install the sim card.

LTE does not require a sim card! LTE is similar to WiMax there both radio's! Verizon couldve of use WiMax if they wanted to but they felt LTE was better...sim card has nothing do with LTE and how it function!

Yes the current towers for wimax only need software upgrade to use lte. But phones like evo that originally used wimax can never use lte as it requires an lte chip that comes built in to the phone which the evo doesn't have. Good news is that when sprint switches to lte they will leave wimax running also. So there will probably be dual lte, wimax phones that will take advantage of all that 4g coverage. Sprint has a chance to have a huge 4g footprint not to mention they are working on the newest push to talk technology. I can't wait.

I asked sprint this question and the indeed said it would work. This is almost a done deal that Sprint will swap to LTE. It sounds like customer service has been through training explaining who and how my EVO would work. Could you imagine the backlash if Sprint stopped growing WiMax and started LTE and you live in a city that only has 3g currently (Me) and then to find out Sprint had LTE launched? I'd want Sprint to issue me a new phone that could get what I'm paying for. All these WiMax phones are dropping from Spring if they would not work they have LG/HTC/Samsung wait before they made a phone until they knew what Sprint was gonna run if it weren't compatible.

I don't think IDEN figures into the equation at all. Slowly but surely nextel is going away which is why there will be the new push-to-talk technology coming out on sprint phones. The entire IDEN network will be decommissioned and a thing of the past by 2014 as long as Sprint doesn't do anything to push their timetable back.

Actually according to Sprint themselves iden is here to stay, only they want to incorporate it into cdma. With this update to towers they are also doing some iden enhancements. LTE is prospected to maybe roll out to Sprints network in a possible 3to4 years

Iden is being phased out. Sprint is introducing a new technology today will offer same benefits as current push to talk phones. But now they will all include high evdo speeds and better coverage. Just look up the new sprint vision initiative that sprint introduced a couple months ago. I think it also included a slightly faster 3g speed by introducing the next level of evdo. This way as they make the changes necessary for lte people won't be too mad.
Right now its not that bad. I think most people use 4g when they travel and tether to their laptop or tablets. I only use 4g when I'm at a hotel due to the fast battery drain. Right now all 4g phones including verizon are battery hoggers.
