Re: Going from unrevoked 3.2 to 3.3

I think this thread is confusing to the readers. I am standing on the sidelines and I can see room for mistakes. It is hard to tell who is talking to who. When you answer, be sure to quote who you are answering.

Solved: Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?

I got this, and several other errors.
After many failed attempts (with different errors and results) to root my HTC Incredible (with SLCD) with Unrevoked 3.32 and HBOOT drivers version 2.0.0010.00002, I finally got it to work. Here is what I did:

1. Uninstalled zsploit! I could not do this from the AppBrain market app, which I usually use for uninstalls, because it didn't show up there. I used Android Tweak instead (free download) and it took all of 2 seconds.

2. Uninstalled all task and system related utilities that I had manually installed. This will be different for everyone so think about what apps you installed that "optimize" some aspect of the phone. You can always re-download and reinstall them later.

I think those two steps are probably what fixed the problem but you should know what else I did differently from all of my failed attempts, just to be thorough.

3. I changed my live animated wallpaper to just an image.

4. In Settings, Development I checked "Stay Awake".

5. I started Unrevoked (reflash_package.exe) *before* plugging in the freshly restarted-in-normal-mode phone.

Here is what DID NOT WORK FOR ME!:
using a different computer,
using a different cable,
retrying the whole procedure many, many times,
turning off the password/pattern lock (the nine dots, if you have it on),
using Unrevoked v3.30 (27MB) instead of v3.32 (28MB),
crying (well, not really).

Notes:
At some point in the many, many attempts half of my widgets dissappeared and were replaced with some placeholder message. DON'T WORRY! Just drag the messages to the "Remove" button, like a normal widget uninstall. Then reinstall (re-put?) the widget and it works.

Also, don't get too desperate and try to flash a ROM to your phone just to get rooted! Rooting should not be terribly disruptive and is a fairly low-risk operation if you can use google and patiently follow instructions. Flashing a ROM is not so trivial and the risk of screwing things up is greater! If you only want the joys and freedoms of being rooted, and it's not working for you right now, then flashing a ROM is like getting surgery for a headache! Just wait a few weeks and check the forums again. The developers are effing amazing!

Phone:
HTC Incredible with SLCD (not AMOLED)
Hardware Version 0003 (that means it's an SLCD)
Android 2.2 from Verizon's November 2010 OTA update

Computer OS for all tests:
XP Pro

Stuff used for rooting:
HBOOT drivers version 2.0.0010.00002 (the version number is in the android_winusb.inf text file) I got these from unrevoked.com. I'm guessing that this version, or higher, should work fine.

Unrevoked 3.32 (reflash_package.exe)

Good Luck!

Re: Going from unrevoked 3.2 to 3.3

also make sure that you have the newest version of unrevoked, there are portions of the website where the links point to old versions.
