Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

Greetings all. I am very sad right now. I have always considered myself an advanced user. I have Unlocked many WinMo phones with Hard-SPL and flashed many ROMs. With WinMo I have never been stuck for more than 20 minutes before figuring out how to fix it.

However, this EVO is killing my ego. I have HBOOT - 2.02.0000 and Radio - 2.15.00.09.01.

I was following the steps in the [highly confusing] EVERYTHING EVO post by FastRX8. I read the FAQ, downloaded the zips ("EVO-recovery" and "Full Root Files") and, according to the post's instruction, skipped to Section 7 because I have hboot 2.02. All was going well until step 7.9 when the device tried to load the PC36IMG.zip. The error was RADIO_V2 Fail-PU, but each load was successful after that. At the very end it said that the Update Failed and a prompt to reboot.

After that, when I tried to boot, it would get stuck at a screen with a little Icon of a phone with a large red /!\ on top. I held Volume Up and then pressed Power, and followed the prompt to clear storage/factory reset.

The result is (as previously stated) hanging on the initial white splash screen.

This is the most trouble I have had with any device, ever. I would appreciate any and all help that someone could provide for me.

Thank you.

Right now if I simply boot the device, it hangs at the white "htc EVO 4G" splash screen until I remove the battery (I waited 10+ minutes to be sure).

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

did try to re-download pc36 file and then try again?

redex777 12-27-2010 06:49 PM

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

I re-downloaded it and the MD5 hashes match. No corrupt download. The guide has outdated links and also seems to have portions of it copied and pasted from outdated XDA guides. This makes me worried that I may have flashed an older, incompatible image.

I might just take it to the sprint store and have them help me. I haven't actually voided my warranty [yet]...

try this
[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v1.9.4 (12/22/10) - xda-developers

if you need a flash-able ruu go here so you can get back to stock and try to root again
Supersonic Shipped ROMs - xda-developers

they are being uploaded now

Are you Signed = Off

That is S = off in HBoot?

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

Install Amon_RA Recovery. There are a bunch of links to it on XDA.
If you are S = Off, flash a Rom like Sprint Lover's All in One.

Went and looked at the Link. Interesting but I am not going to run a batch file to root my phone. I am rooted the old step by step way but I just bought my daughter an EVO for Christmas and want to root her phone. She is HBoot 2.02 004 phone with 3.7.
I don't mind their method but I want to do it one step at a time. I want to know exactly where it jams if it does. I am the kind of Dad that could not watch my girl get her shots. Jamming her phone would be worse.

But thanks for the link. I will use the procedure but in manual mode.

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

Red, I do not think you are as bad off as you think. You may be over it now. As long as you can make it into HBoot, you are save-able. It is those rare cases where someone cannot get into HBoot or see the phone via ABD that I that I get concerned. Everyone gets out alive.
Just give us a chance.

Negative. S = ON.

Here is the info on my HBOOT screen, transcribed exactly:

Thank you for the support. It does make me feel better. I am never usually stumped like this. I am glad to be a part of a community of such magnanimity.

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

I followed KarlE's link to the stock shipped RUU's and IMG's. Can I simply copy the zip file in the second link to my SD card and then use HBOOT? Here is the file I downloaded:
Code:

PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2 .15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.zip

If by that you mean selecting RECOVERY from the HBOOT menu, then no, I don't think so. Doing this simply soft resets the device, which leads to hanging on the initial splash screen.

The PC36IMG's that I have used have all resulted in either hanging on splash, or the screen with the little icon of the phone and /!\ in red.

I have yet to try the shipped PC36IMG's from KarlE's link.

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

I just attempted to use the stock/shipped PC36IMG from KarlE's post over at xda. It was halfway through the RADIO step when the screen turned off, and after I picked my eyeballs back up off the floor I read a message saying that my battery voltage was too low. I will charge it to full and try again.

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

You are not Rooted until S=Off. You must work with a Signed RUU. I am not sure why you can't flash from your PC. Are you getting Error 177 (USB thing)

Try re-installing HTC_SYNC and running the RUU. Let us get you back to stock before anything else.

I will be out of pocket for the next 9 hrs but will check in when I get home. There are some real sharp cookies over at XDA so stay active there.

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

One more thing, I kept having problems with installing the RUU from the PC and it turned out to be my USB cable. It worked for simple things but would spike the connection while trying to run the RUU.

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

I wasn't using the RUU because I don't really know how to get the device to connect to the PC without running android. I flashed the stock ROM via the SD card and all appears to be back to square 1. Thanks again to everyone froyo help (no pun intended ;).

When the battery is finished charging I am going to try the Auto Root from XDA. I'll let you know how it goes.

Glad you are out of the woods. Most of us have been there to one degree or another. It is a right of passage, I guess.

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

The deeper I delve into this the more humble I become. Apparently, the PC36IMG.zip that I downloaded from KarlE's link changed my hboot to 2.10.0001

Where in this title does it imply that flashing this image will change the device's hboot to 2.10? There is no "HBOOT" or even a "2.10.0001" -
Code:

PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed
I am hoping this discovery will resolve the newer issues I have been experiencing.

just use this method
[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - The Savior Edition - Upd. 12.26.10 - xda-developers

htc and sprint never say if there's an hboot version changes in the title and everyone new that 3.70 had an hboot change

you should have downloaded the one the was the same as the version you had

Re: Unable to boot EVO, unable to connect to PC for RUU

Before attempt to root your phone again go completely back stock flashing the stock ruu! Do this... First make sure HTC Sync is installed on your pc/laptop. Next, boot your evo into hboot. Select "fast boot" and then HTC sync will detect your phone and properly flash it. Run the stock Sprint ruu. Once it finishes, then you can proceed to root. It's safer to do it this way and start all over than to continue from the custom zip you mentioned.

the zip is derived from the ruu it contains all parts that the ruu would load just without install-shield and is made flashable

I successfully rooted and then flashed cyanogenmod. However, I was a bit puzzled that there is no 4G. I found this zip with a newer radio than I currently have (I have 2.15.00.09.01). Do you think this will allow radio cyanogenmod to detect the WiMax radio?

I backed up my RSA keys so I'm not too worried anyway.

A good ROM for you would be Sprint Lover's or Azreal. They are 3.7 Roms and nearly stock. Everything works on them.

Is there a way to flash a ROM (sprint lovers) from fastboot on my pc?

I have screwed up the recovery on my phone, so I do not have acces to the phone via adb. Therefore I cannot sent the image to the card for hboot to run.

you can load recovery from fastboot

and if you do power + vol down that will get you to hboot

Install RomManager from the Market and go the the Alternate Recovery and install Recovery. Should be good to go.
