I suggest unrevoked, that is what I used and there are various videos/tutorials available. Just make sure you read and do research, the more you do the more comfortable you will be.

unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool, v3.22

Here is the unrevoked website. If you're using a Windows PC, download the HBOOT files and install them. When you click on the above link, go to "More Info?" to learn about the HBOOT files. Other than that, just make sure to follow the instructions for unrevoked. Also, you may want to do research to see what you can do AFTER your phone is rooted. Just having a rooted phone doesn't mean anything if you don't know what it can do.

It all depends on what you want. If you are looking for a Stock like ROM with tweaks for performance etc, I'd recommend Chris's Sprint Lovers ROM or ricsim78's Stock Turbo.

Re: Looking to root phone for the first time

Picking out a ROM, can be kind of tough. The developer of the ROM "The Chef" cooks different elements or applications into the ROM and also removes some elements that they don't want or use. Read up about all of them here and at XDA-Developers.
My favorite is AVA-ROM V9. He is now at V10 but V9 had much better battery life.

But you are right in that their is way too much information out their to simply root.
We "old-timers" simply point you to the root thread but it has become a little cumbersom. Evcen when the Sticky is kept up, it can confuse a newby. A simple, this is how you do it, w/o comnment would be the answer.

Face it, this is the Root your Phone Forum. That is what brings us here.

WoW, I want to thank everyone here for helping this guy, I was waiting for a snippy, "read the stickies" response and you guys lent an honest helping hand. From a winmo guy myself getting into Android, I appreciate this approach! ThANK YOU!
