I think it depends on which store you take it too and how qualified the techs are.
My wife's TP's speaker went out and they just replaced it.
Why would a new EVO not be able to be rooted?
p.

Re: scared to get evo fixed

how much would they charge to replace the speaker on an insurance claim?

I know that about 3 days before they changed their insurance to cover cracked screens are free replacement of screen, I busted mine. when I was able to make it to sprint to get it fixed, it was free (i was ready to pay) and they replaced everything but the hardware board. Got it back with new case, screen, speakers (both were shot and I just ignored it) and gave it back to me for free of charge. Sadly the screen on that phone went nuts 2 weeks ago and started flashing green and purple. so I took it in and they replaced just the screen (diff store, diff state) and that screen did same, put in an other, and that did same, put in an other and it went black, so I got the new one with new cam hardware, and 2.02 hboot that is not rootable with even unrevoked. so its stock. I do get a battery life of a whole day under moderate use compaired to taking off charger before work, plugging into car to work, plugging into car during work, and plugging into car after work and getting home with 9% battery.

Then after your rooted but the stock rom back on it. Try Sprint Lovers it keeps all the stock programs and adds a lot of features and tweaks to make it a great phone. Also, unrevoked website now shows that it can root all versions of the Evo. I don't know if anyone has tried it yet but if someone has a new phone with the hboot 2.02 they can try it and let the world know how it went.

Hello, I actually work at a sprint service and repair center and we can definitely replace just the speaker. We only order a replacement if it is something we can not repair. As long as the store has hero/evo speakers in stock (they are the same) then they can do the repair in about a half hour.
If they say they have to order a replacement then go to a different store.
The repair is extremely easy, sometimes the associates are just lazy and would rather order a replacement then do the work.

I myself like only do the unrevoked root process since the stock rom works fine for me. All I use on mine is wifi tethering and I run setcpu and juiced program. With the stock rom I don't have to worry about taking it in to the repair center. I can see why your worried. Even though new model is rootable, unrevoked is still not available for it. But soon it will.
