Need to replace my Evo

I need to return my Evo to BB due to a buzzing earspeaker thats driving me nuts. My question is, I am currently running Fresh's latest ROM and have backed up both the Nand + ext and the google proprietary files to my sd card. Will I need to root the new phone and install all of the apps or will a simple restore of the aforementioned backup files work?

Also, should I try to wipe my phone before taking it back?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Need to replace my Evo

Root new phone, restore your nand+ext and google. Full wipe before you send would be good, unroot if you don't want them to know. nand saves your google sync, contacts, apps, sms/mms files. You'll get it all back on replacement after you root.

Thanks for the replies!
Just when I get everything dialed in I have to replace the phone :(

Think of it this way, if you did full backup, when you get replacement and root it, then do a complete restore, it eill be like you had your phone off for some quite time and turned it back on. The new will be exactly like the old as far as operating goes. Just the hassle of doing it.

Ugh.... just got back from Best Buy and was told by the rep that I need to unroot the phone and flash back to the stock ROM. Apparently, when they send it in for repair the ROM is checked and if not stock the warranty will be deemed invalid. Ironically the rep then asked how I liked the latest Fresh ROM and told me he was running the same thing on his.

Re: Need to replace my Evo

I would suggest you NOT use the latest RUU to flash your evo to stock rom. I did that to take my phone in this morning. Now I want to go back to Root to continue "playing" with my phone and it seems this latest stock version 3.30.651.2 is not "rootable" at the moment at least. So im stuck with stock rom! BLOWS!

I would suggest you use a previous version -3.29xxx since those have already been cracked and rooted in the past, otherwise you will be stuck like me, trying to find a solution...

Oh crap! Thanks for the heads up! I was just in the process of d/l that version too.

What a pain in the a$$ this is becoming. Just to rub salt in the wound, BB said it could take up to 30 days to get it back.

We need a Sticky on, "I am taking my phone to the Sprint store and need to restore it to stock." Seems to pop up a couple times a week now.

I agree, a detailed step-by-step so we can return to root easily would be great!

Hey Sheik ... for a little clarity, which speaker is bad ? Is it the speaker phone speaker or the ear piece speaker ? I have options for you so you dont have to un-root your phone.

My phone from 6/4 purchased wil waiting had micro usb go out last week could not unroot so I let battery die. Took 30 minutes at Sprint Repair store to get replacement. I guess I am lucly they could have put other battery in a checked.

The ear piece speaker has an annoying tinny buzz during calls. I am all ears if you have a solution to that!

Just thought I would post my findings for others that need to unroot to stock.

Research got me to this thread with very clear and concise instructions and links to required files in v.3.29.xxx.

Personally, I am waiting to see if TornACL has any info that will resolve my original issue. If not, I will follow the above to unroot and return the phone to Sprint.

Thanks to everyone here and over at xda for sharing your knowledge and feeding this addiction :D

the odds are that the phone hanging on the techs hip is rooted and running a custom ROM.

I went to a Sprint kiosk in the Mall and got talking with the sales staff. Started showing some apps and he recognized my ROM. At first I felt nervous though it was only social visit. Within minutes, we are all talking about being rooted and the ROMs we tried. Seems the most "tecked up" was the district manager just in from Florida. Had a fun gab-fest with some pretty sharp hackers.

Its nice when " customers" come in being honest about whats been going on with their devices. I am more inclined to help a person who wants to be honest about what's broken, than one who thinks I am a (EXPLETIVE) idiot and won't be able to sort it out anyway.

I should keep up on some of my posts. Sometimes things like this I post and don't get resolved in time, then others with my concerns pop in later in thread and I tend to ignore them.

lkillen, This is true. There is actually lots of lurkers here that work at sprint and keep on the DLow for work reasons. Wether it be to learn for themselfs or find out what we are doing. I have no doubt in my mind that the phone on the hip of the tech could be rooted/unlocked and have hacks with custom roms. Just like I have no doubt that the tech working on my phone at said given moment may have an Iphone 4g and could care less about me and report me to his boss for sake of his/her job.

tornacl, same goes to you, mostly the last part I said. We would all like to think the tech working on our junk has far better mods to the same type of junk, but face it, you also get the tech that is running a fully stock moto R2D2 on VZW and would rat on us in the blink of an eye, and not give 2 hoots about us. Paying full price for a replacement when we broke the screen and that is now a free fix with insurance, and looking at hefty fines from sprint (hoping they don't drop us) is why we revert back to stock and then flash back to what we have.

Let us assume you are a complete idiot and hope you don't catch it. You could make a choice and do one of 2 things. Look us in the eye, say good luck with your device, whisper a secret in our ear we missed and send us on our way, or look us in the eye, give us back our broken device, hand us a $800 bill, and tell us that AT&T is around the corner.

Most sprint help only care about that check at end of week, and not the consumer. Big props to you for being one of us, and understanding why we do what we do. You would do the same in our shoes if you weren't a sprint tech and could fix your own without anyone knowing what you got.

I have known for some time you guys are here doing what we do, but not all of you.

Thanks for being a help on this thread too. =D>

Like I posted already, I am more inclined to help a person who wants to be honest about the challenges they are having with their device than one who isn't. You will come across those techs that have been " behind the glass " for way to long and have no " Face to Face " skills left. A major shift happening for us now as consumers and employees is a shift back to " Customer Service " . I modded my own devices way before my current employment ... and find that that experience can really help me deal with those " troubled souls " that don't wanna fess up to what they did wrong. I have the tools at my disposal to reload your " brick" ... question is do you wanna help me to help you.

we do it for a reason. If the carriers did for us, what we do for ourselves, sites like this wouldn't exist. and the devopers would work for/with carriers/manufacturers/os builders, and the world would be a better place.

So Torn, what are your thoughts about the earpiece?

Yeah I do, I was just hoping to avoid the whole unrooting deal. Im kind of hesitant to doing the repair myself and messing something up though. Is there a link to the repair by chance?

FYI to those interested.

Well after following the directions in the linked thread, I got my phone back to unrooted stock without a hitch! Took the phone to Sprint Repair Center and after replacing the speaker with two new ones, the tech discovered that there was a faulty "up" volume switch causing the buzzing. I will be getting a replacement (refurb) tomorrow so hopefully I wont have any new issues.

Special thanks to Torn for his offer to help me out!
