New to Android
 

Whats up guys?

Well I will be buying my Evo on Friday, so I am expecting it sometime next week. However I have a few questions (Since this is my first Android device).

What are some MUST HAVE apps & games?
What is YOUR PERSONAL favorite Evo ROM (or favorite ROMs)
What Case would YOU recommend (I obviously will be wanting a case asap)

I will add anymore questions as I think of them, as I had a ton..however, I am just currently to overloaded on "Evo envy" and the wait is KILLING me, lol.

Looking forward to being a proud and happy Evo owner (I use to be anti-Evo, then tried one at work and since then its been on like donkey kong)

Must have games:heavy gunner,asphalt 5.
Apps:tapa talk (makes bring on forums from phone way easier)
Pandora
Rock player.
Personal favorite rom right now is calkulin.i also like damage control, and cyanogen.keep in mind that there is no root method yet for those who got the froyo ota.As for case I bought the seidio innicase 2 first and became unhappy with it, just didn't feel like a tight fit on the phone.So I bought the sedio active and its way better imo feels more protected and feels right in the hand and tight on the phone so I deff. Recommend that case.

Welcome to the Evo community.
1. Check the apps and games thread @ http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=154

Personally I enjoy Robo Defense, Armored Strike, anything by Gameloft (they don't use the market but really show what the phone can do IMO)

2. Again check the Upgrade forum @ http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=210 since the chefs generally put a nice first page which shows everything they are doing. I've been using OMJ's roms since the WinMo days and continue to do so now. They are not heavily modded but stable and fast.

3. Check the accessories forum @ http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=211 but I use the Seidio Innocase II. I've been using their case and holster combo for many devices over the years and they have been light weight but offer great protection. I've endured 3 shrt 3 foot drops of my Evo and mere scratches in the case.

Of course it goes without being said to search the forums for what you need as I'm sure you know. I certainly know how exciting it is to get this device since I waited specifically for the Evo to make the android plunge for. Have fun!

I can't even begin to list all the apps that I like...plus its a very personal preference kinda thing...so I'll leave out some of the "games" and whatnots...

on ROMs...I've tried OMJ's, Fresh, Calkulin (loyal follower of his WinMo kitchens) Avalaunch's V and X series ROMs (think those are NOT as actively updated) Avalaunch's FroyoSense. I am currently running CM6 RC1 and continuously updating with the nightly builds that gets generated. If you are willing to leave Sense behind...Cyanogen Mod is the way to go...don't think you'll be disappointed.

Here are a list of useful utility type apps...I do believe that most of these will require root:

SetCPU - for overclocking and more importantly undervolting

Juice Defender - saves you "more" juice

Startup Cleaner - to keep "unwanted" and unused apps from starting up...and running in hte background

Touiteur - if you're a twitter guy

Dolphin Browser HD - a browser that is MOST like Firefox...tab browsing, extensions, full screen, desktop experience...you name it...its there

Astro File Manager - definitely a must have

Handcent messenger - a more robust sms/mms app

Clockwork ROM manager - easy to get to recovery...especially if you're going to root and flash ROMs later (when root is available for the OTA)

Tapatalk - mentioned earlier, gives you widgets to your fav forums

Beautiful Widgets - if you steer away from Sense

LauncherPRO and ADW launcher - both "Home" replacements if you're done with Sense

Titanium Back Up OR My Backup Pro - for backing up apps and data...there are pros and cons for each...but seems MOST favor Titanium

SlideIT - keyboard that resembles Swype if you can't get your hands on the Android Swype Beta.

Linpack for Android, Fps2D, Quadrant - measures your system performance on speed and graphical prowess

Task Manager (Apollo) - this one I use...even on Froyo since I like to have some control on whats on and what needs to be turned off. Some argue that Android (esp Froyo) has great task and memory management...to me...I think that's a personal preference.

I'm learning that Android can me a LOT more involving than anything you might know from WinMo...its really how much you want to learn. Realize that the EVO's stock battery is a bit gimped...so getting an extended battery might be somethin to look into. As well as an external battery pack. I am using the Innocase for EVO by Seidio...but I think I'll be looking for another...since I'm not too happy with the fit of the Innocase (disappointing...esp from Seidio.)
