Tethered speed difference, usb vs wifi
Anybody else notice this?
On Wi-Fi tether to my netbook, running a speed test to my netbook in Raleigh (4G), I cannot break 2mbits. change to usb at the axact same location, I hit 5.40 mbits to my netbook. Same test server. Not different tower as I was stationary. I travel ALOT as an independent HUD inspector, and I am tethered in the car most all of the time, as I have a computer mount like a cop. I have found this often, but the biggest difference I just reported. What do you think? /mike |
Re: Tethered speed difference, usb vs wifi
let me add.... when at home, via wi-fi to my century link 10mbit dsl via linksys router, I get full speed tests (9 or so)..
I am yhinking the router function of EVO slows connection down. |
Re: Tethered speed difference, usb vs wifi
got curious and had to try this again. using the 4g hotspot (still for free! w00t!), I averaged about 2.25. using wired tethering with the paid pdanet I averaged 4.5. I did three back to back tests for each way at 10 a.m. in austin, tx doing the hotspot first. now then, that being said, up until within the last couple of days there was pretty much no difference in speed between the two since I've checked it before. the past couple of days though I have noticed much slower speeds with the hotspot. haven't downloaded anything, changed settings, updated, nuffin.

Re: Tethered speed difference, usb vs wifi
I have noticed this for sure. In fact my wired tethering speeds will reach 6-7 megs down...depending on signal strength. When using wireless tethering I'm lucky to get 2 megs down.
I like using this program for wired tethering. http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/ |
Re: Tethered speed difference, usb vs wifi
Yup this is pretty well known even for windows mobile. I believe its due to the fact the phone does not have to pass the data through both radios and do all the processing power of doing that which is most likely the reason the data slows down. In my opinion I see no reason to ever use wireless tether unless your sharing the connection to multiple people. Its really cool I have it on my phone but honestly I always use wired tether, the phone is being charged while plugged in and the data speed is faster just makes perfect sense.

Re: Tethered speed difference, usb vs wifi
just did my test again. 3 times with hotspot then 3 times with pdanet. averaged 4.3 with hotspot and 5 with pdanet. still on 4g with both and same closest server (not the recommended one since speedtest.net seems to like ks while I'm in tx, but the actual closest). usually my speeds between the 2 are at least as close as this.

Re: Tethered speed difference, usb vs wifi
For clarification on this, what are you using for wired tether ? pdanet ?

Re: Tethered speed difference, usb vs wifi
Pdanet has never worked for me.
