Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't take
So I'm desperately trying to help a friend that bricked his evo with the recent OTA update. Unfortunately, no matter what i tell him, it seems to backfire.
He ordered it from best buy online. He tried to return it to his only local best buy, which doesn't sell sprint phones btw, and they told him to take it to sprint because it's a software issue, not hardware. He then called best buy support and they told him basically the same. Finally, he tried emailing ecare, calling customer support, and taking it to a sprint store - they all told him to take it to best buy because that's where it's from. So, who should take responsibility? Where the hell does he get an exchange? He's coming from an iPhone and loves the EVO, but he is not getting a good first impression of Sprint/Android support. He just purchased a week ago, so it's within the return period for both places. |
Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return?
edit: sprint is saying to return the phones back to the store they got it from: Some users of Sprint's new EVO 4G Android handset have reported that an over-the-air software update has made their smartphones dumb as doorstops. Sprint has apparently told users whose phones were bricked that they should return the devices to the stores where they were purchased. That may not result in an immediate replacement, however -- the EVO is still in short supply in many markets.

Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
It's within 30 days. Best Buy MUST replace it under their 30 day guarantee. It's a legal thing. I've been having a lot of problems working out who I need to return it too. Sprint declared BB must take care of the problem, then after 30 days, sprint insurance covers software. I've got the separation issue, so I think I'll bring it in to BB, it's just that they don't really have any yet.

Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
You go to a sprint store with a repair center(this is important). They may be able to unbrick it, if not they will replace it, but this is NOT a return. Trust me HTC has provided them with the software to try to unbrick these things.
In case you don't believe me http://twitter.com/htc/statuses/17438994729 RT @sprint: If the 6/28 update resulted in your EVO not powering up, please go to a Sprint corporate store for help http://bit.ly/a9UqQr 1:17 PM Jun 30th via HootSuite htc |

Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
FYI...Sprint has no way of knowing where you purchased the phone unless you tell them. Just say you purchased the phone from Sprint's website. They have no way to verify if you did or didn't. That way you can take care of the problem at your local Sprint store. I purchase a lot of my phones from Ebay or Craigslist and then after I activate them I take it back to Sprint say there is a problem...and presto! They have always replaced it for me with a brand new one!!!

Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
+1 on taking the phone to a repair store. Many of the stores are just franchises and are only able to sell you the device. You know it's a franchise when they get on the phone to make changes to your account and to activate devices. (a lot like Best Buy)
the sprint website will show you which locations are repair/corporate offices. |
Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
ha, some say to take it to best buy while others say to take it to sprint... hmm

Not sure if they're doing anything about it other than exchanging for another one though. |
Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
take it to a sprint repair shop!!! they will either fix it or get you a new one (refurbished).

Definitely go to a repair center, I work in one and I'd either fix it or get a replacement for you.

Yet another thread I'm reading on the Evo and it's issues... This is crazy, such a bad ass phone, but soooo many problems..!!

Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
Don't take it to a repair store!! Only do that if you're past 30 days or you don't care if you get a refurb. Oh and upper level corporate gives repair centers some serious sh*t for replacing the evo within 30 days, TRUST ME, WE GOT IT LOL

Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
lol you guys are no help on this matter. basically the same answers he got from both best buy and sprint, which is a bunch of finger pointing. oh well, guess he's just going to have to throw a fit in one of the stores...
thanks anyway! |

My phone got messed up bad from the OTA. (Bought from Radioshack)
Took it to a sprint repair center, they were going to order me a replacement. But it wouldnt be avail till Monday. Luckily my local Shack is getting one in today! Sucks they cant sell it, but paid customers do come first. |
Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
so not sure if this thread was reassuring... I have an honest question, please don't beat me down for violating my warranty with a root.
I rooted my phone so I can tether and I am about to update to a patched version of the recent update. I; however, am scared that this will root my phone... If this does happen, can I still go to sprint to get it unbricked? |

Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
Depending on where you purchased your Evo, within the first 30 days of owning that said phone...that store has to warranty exchange that phone for a new one. Indirect stores are liable for the first 30 days (Best Buy, Radio Shack etc)..If you purchased it from Sprint, then take it back to Sprint. Now onto the Evo exchanges...in 2 days this phone will have been out for 30 days...so pretty much everyone out there is still within there 30 day warranty. It generally takes 2-3 months for Refurbished Phones to circulate to the stores or even Sprint's warehouse...so until then you will be getting a new phone, not a refurb.
A lot of companys do finger pointing...is called Reps being miss informed..or not informed at all. They go off the top of their head with your question and try to explain it...most of the time wrong. If you are trained correctly in this field...they tell you how warranty's work...30 days is within the company you purchased it from...after 30 days you have 1 year within the company...or the manf of the phone...if you have extended warranty that extends throughout the 2 year contact you have with said cell company. Replace your phone whenever there is a issue.. your still covered.. That help any? |
Re: Best Buy bought EVO bricked by OTA update, where to return? Sprint/BestBuy won't
ok this is how a purchase from best buy is supposed to go for a bricked phone due to the update.
we are supposed to exchange it if we have stock. unfortunately, stock is ver limited right now. if not, we can do a rain check and hold one when we get one in or we advise the customer to go to a sprint REPAIR CENTER. they (sprint repair center) knows that they (sprint OTA) bricked the phone and are taking care of customers. it is VERY important that it be a REPAIR CENTER. it is not a return, but a repair under warranty. the last thing i want to do is send a customer to a different store to solve a problem, but in this case we may have to. |
