tether? wifi? hotspot?

ok so please dont shoot me as ive never used tether. i now have the evo and realize that they offer wifi or hotspot. my question is what is the difference between the three of these?
the other day i used the wifi.. then began to panic that i was going to be charged for using the wifi.
i have tried to read up on this and have asked the sprint reps about it. please help :confused1:

Nothing to worry about.

Here ya go

Sprint Hotspot = $30 a month, you can use your phone to connect your laptop, ipods..whatever to wifi internet, just like you would in your house using your wireless router. 4g and 3g connection.

Wifi Tether = FREE - This will require you to root your phone. You can connect devices just like the Sprint hotspot, using 4g and 3g connections.

Wired Tether = FREE - Just like Wifi tether only you connect your phone to your laptop via usb cable and you can get internet on your laptop using your phones internet connection.

Wifi = Connecting your phone to your wireless router or coffeeshops wireless internet is free. It's just a feature of your phone. Don't panic. It's free!

Hope that helps you out!

Re: tether? wifi? hotspot?

Since the OTA arrived, we are unable to tether for free as Sprint/HTC locked us out. Hopefully the people at unrevoked can come out with a new version to let us back in...

So if I want to connect my phone to my home's WIFI and then use my phone as a router to wired tether to my computer ( I do not have a wireless internet card on my computer) is that possible for free on a non-rooted EVO?

Not sure I completely understand what your last post is asking OP. but I think this is it. If ur talkin bout gettin your homes WiFi internet connection to an older computer that doesn't have WiFi, just go buy a wireless adapter for $15 or $20 . Then you can connect it to your homes WiFi.

What did you try with. I was using easytether from the market. You install it on the phone and install there application on your computer and just plug it in and connect . Couldn't get pdanet to work for some reason.

Wait I thought you had to be rooted for this to work? I have always gotten an error when trying to do this, before and after the update.

You don't have to be rooted for wired usb tethering , only for wireless tether.

I didn't realize there was an app for it. I'm going to give it a try when I get near my computer.

Alright so after reading a few other threads, it sounds like I need 3rd party software to get it working. If that is the case, why is it even an option to tether if it doesn't even work? (I'm getting the data call failure error)

Because Sprint wants you to see what you can buy from them, even though it's included in the Android OS (before they disable it). The nice thing is, Android is open source, and free to Sprint, and they can hack away, and so can we

Because sprint wants you to pay $30 a month to use their wifi hotspot. Thats is such a ripoff if you ask me.

PdaNet is no longer working for me. It worked for one day and stopped. I can't do Easy Tether because I don't have Windows.

Re: tether? wifi? hotspot?

I just opted to get the mobile hotspot for $30 . This is the only thing that i missed about my Touch Pro 2... the "wifi sharing" program . I dont want to root my phone so i will just sacrifice for now untill a program comes out that will allow me to tether without having to mod my OS on my phone. I tried Wired Tethering and it didnt work... or I couldnt get it to work.

Mobile hotspot works great.... only bummer is it cost $30 a month. where is wifi-sharing for evo when you need it.
