Will not stay connected via USB
i searched around and i cant find the thread on this.
i was charging my phone through the USB port and it just randomly disconnected. i reconnected at it is recognized for a second then disconnects. the menu comes up on the screen and i see the notification at the top, but after about 2 seconds it just acts like i unplugged it i have tried multiple USB ports, cables and different PC's and they all do the same thing now. i installed HTC sync and rebooted the machine. i changed the power settings on the machine and made sure that the USB power management is disabled. does any one have3 any idea whats going on? |
Re: Will not stay connected via USB
Will the EVO continue to charge through the port? If not, it is likely a bad USB port on the EVO. If so, are you running a custom ROM, are you rooted, what do you have installed on the EVO, have you restarted the EVO?

Re: Will not stay connected via USB
i have this issue tho I admit it was after flashing Damage Control 3.2.1 but I think it a bad usb port, i have to keep it in a certain position to work, but htc is known for having bad usb ports on a fone, so if it gets really bad, I'm just gonna take it back...but out of curiosity are you on DC rom too???

Re: Will not stay connected via USB
I have the stock ROM. not rooted. with only basic apps installed. handcent, dolphin, and a few games but those all have been there longer than the issue.
plugged directly in to a wall the phone charges fine. plugged in to ANY usb port it connects for about 2 seconds then disconnects. there is just enough time for the connect to PC screen to come up but that doesnt even stay there long enough to make a selection. so something else thats weird. with the phone completely powered off, connected to USB port on my PC, the orange charge led is on... as soon as i power the phone on it disconnects. my best guess is its a driver issue |
Re: Will not stay connected via USB
alright i think i got it...
Info : Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit -first i uninstalled HTC Sync and the HTC driver from add/remove programs -unplugged the phone from the PC -reinstalled HTC sync -plugged phone back in and selected Disk Drive on the connect to PC screen -then in my system tray i double clicked on the installing new device icon -it gets stuck searching for the ADB update via windows update. so i clicked where it says Skip windows update -wait a few seconds and bam! it works |
Re: Will not stay connected via USB
I agree, I would suspect a driver issue. Ironically HTC put HTC Sync on the SD card, so you will need a reader to get it off, if you haven't already copied it to your PC.

Re: Will not stay connected via USB
any one?
this happens on my laptop and my desktop both are Windows 7 x64 with the HTC sync installed i have hard reset the phone to try and see if that would do anything, but it was not help. |
Re: Will not stay connected via USB
You sure the device hasn't just simply stopped charging because it's full?
|
Re: Will not stay connected via USB
it has nothing to do with being finshed charging... i am plugging in to a PC and wating for the connect to PC screen to pop up... it pops up for maybe a second then it goes away before i can make a selection and the phone is then disconnected.
if i plug directly in to the wall charger it charges with out issue. i have tried different cable and different ports on now 3 different computers and they all have the same outcome |

Have you tried plugging it in to another PC? You sure the USB ports on the original PC aren't at fault? |

Re: Will not stay connected via USB
If you've had the phone less than 30 days and everything is still stock, get a replacement.

My suggestion, if these cables (three of which you say you've tried) are OEM cables that are cheap ones, ditch them, go out and get an HTC or Sprint-branded or iGo and try that instead. You've spent this much time and effort on this, what is paying for another cable going to hurt? |
Re: Will not stay connected via USB
wouldn't the USB cable that came in the box be able to do data and power? Like i said, that one does the exact same thing as the 3 aftermarket cables i bought.
the phone is out of the 30day return policy. i really don't think its the phone per say. i think its either a driver issue or software setting some where. i'm not the only person that has had this issue. the other people seem to find that it is completely random on which computers do and don't work. maybe it has something to do with BIOS/motherboard or USB controller settings or voltages.. i don't know, i am completely stumped as a sorta win... i was able to get it to stay connected long enough to my laptop to root the phone! but it still has the issue after root. i just have to keep unplugging and replugging it in and every so often it works for a while the weirdest part is when i plug in to my wall charger it charges just fine and doesn't have a problem. |
Re: Will not stay connected via USB
This happens to me only using incompatible 3rd party cables. Works like a charm with yhe OEM that came in the box.
Since you said you are having this problem even with your OEM, do you happen to know anyone else with the phone to test your cables/PC to compare? Perhaps take your notebook and cables to the local store and test out their demos, that way you can eliminate by trial and error.. EDIT: I don't think many if any others have this problem. I have a stock phone with the stock cable and all works fine. You've added another twist, it works with your charger just fine. That means that somewhere between your PC and Phone, most probably the Phone, is resetting the connection. I am almost willing to say you may have fried your port using 3rd party and the phone is unable to detect the port connection type via usb correctly anymore.. |
Re: Will not stay connected via USB
Mine is doing this, but I have to move the USB cable around a lot to get it to charge. I am going to a Sprint store tomorrow to get it fixed.

If it charges fine from the wall, are you sure your USB is trickling enough power to the device? |

And here I thought it was my computer.... goes and tries another computer ...

Re: Will not stay connected via USB
Uninstalled all of the HTC Software and drivers rebooted reinstalled drivers. That seemed to have corrected the problem. I'm using windows 7 x64 HTC Sync, version: 2.0.40.

Re: Will not stay connected via USB
I can verify this! I went looking for another sync/charger cable and ended up at a Sprint store. No sync cables, but I did pick up a travel charger that had connections that appeared to be the same as the home charger cable. I started this search because the car charger would not stay in the port. Anyway, I got home and found that the cable charged but did not sync. All cables are not the same. Also pay attention to the tabs on the male end - if they are not the appropriate height, then the cable will not stay connected. This particular cable and the way it is built requires little movement to work.

Re: Will not stay connected via USB
i'm starting to suspect a bad pin that could be only effecting the data portion of the USB port on the phone and the charge pins are probably ok which is why the wall charger works

Re: Will not stay connected via USB
Linksys Wireless N Network USB - unplug and the EVo connects and stays connected....I have 12 USB ports with stuff...as soon as the Linksys is plugged back in - instant EVo disconnect every 2 secs.
