Update PRL, then you lose Root!
 

I could not find this before, so I am posting it.

I did the Data PRL "trick" and found it did not work well for me, so I went into settings and then told it to update the prl.. of course, puts the new prl on your phone automatically.

It then reboots the EVO. I tried to run the Wi-Fi Tether and it says it requires a rooted phone!!! I had it rooted with Un-Revoked previously.. and it is "Sticky" on all power offs and reboots.. EXCEPT, if you do a PRL update...

Now, all I had to do was go into file manager and then to my download directory and install un-revoked again, and all is well.

Anybody else have this?

I will go and do a Toast's and then load custom rom, but seriously at the moment, I don't see much of a reason to do that until a Froyo (2.2) rom comes out.

Stock, Rooted, free Wi-Fi tether.. life is good!

Really? I was originally rooted with unrevoked and used the same PRL trick you did, after finding it unnecessary I update my PRL back to stock and I didn't loose my root.

PRL is just preferred roaming list. I don't see how they broke the root in this. Something else had to have happened. Try removing unrevoked redownload it and install again.

Not sure why I got the error message saying that Free Wi-Fi Tether required root, because right before I did the prl trick, then updated prl.. My ROOTED phone did it perfect.

I did not think it would break root, maybe it did not, but the program reported it needed rooted before it could run.. remember, I said it was already rooted prior to the prl trick and then re-update and all ran fine.

Maybe just a flook..

No matter, re-ran unrevoked, and all is well.. I was just reported what happened to me... No issues.. just seeing if it happened to anybody else, or just a fluke with mine.

Unrevoked doesn't really count for rooting.
You should root your phone the real way and then, at minimum, load the stock "rooted" rom. IMO. :)

This is true, however it works great if all you want is to have superuser permission and you're not interested in flashing custom roms.

Some of us are fine with roots like Unrevoked since we don't want to tinker too much. I just want access for certain apps like wifi tethering. Actually that's the only reason I'm rooted. I've done the whole windows mobile load your own rom dance before, and more times than not it's ended up biting me in the rear.

Definitely not saying you didn't lose your root. Just found it odd, and I wouldn't blame the PRL first. Had you just used wifi tether before doing the prl update. I'm just wondering if something else caused it to break, because PRL's are just lists of towers your phone uses to connect to the network.

I used to flash custom roms onto my TP2 all the time, but then I met this beatuful thing called the HTC Evo 4G with Android. Suddenly I don't find myself compelled to flash custom roms in the hope that it will be faster and less laggy. Everything just works, its great.

No, actually when I saw it was a problem I was driving down the road.... did not install anything else since I did the update prl..

maybe something got it and bugged it out.. maybe it isn't attributable to the prl update, but that is when I found it did it to me.. just re-running unrevoked solved it and I have powered off, rebooted since, and still rooted, at least Wi-Fi tether works fine, so I assume the Root still sticky.

I'm with you here!!! I was, too, a flasher on all my prior phones, 6700, Mogul, TP1 and TP2, and this one really doesn't need it at the moment.

AT LEAST until somebody puts out a good FROYO rom..
