OC Widget underclock we know...why OVER clock?

So most of us I'm sure have heard of the OverClock Widget (rooted phones only) in the Market that supposedly helps with battery life. I have it installed and is set as scrn off 245000...and scrn on max 998400.

Having dug around the app some...found that the max setting can be bumped up past the 1GHz mark.

Now, question being...is it even NEEDED to overclock anywhere HIGHER than 1GHz. Has anyone had any success doing that with their EVO's? Will someone pls post some results...just of for s**ts and giggles!!

I believe you still need a custom kernel that supports overclocking. For the Nexus One, most kernels are 998MHz and there are a few that overclock to 1.113GHz or 1.2GHz, and you need something like SetCPU or Overclock Widget to make the phone recognize those overclocked speeds.

I'm running an OCed kernel on my Nexus One, but I don't have any app installed to change the clock speed. I haven't tried Overclock Widget, but whenever I try SetCPU, my battery life always seems to be worse, even if I limit the max to 998MHz. I'm just running this kernel because its one of the most stable ones out there.

So until someone starts making OCed kernels for the Evo, I wouldn't use one of these apps to OC until you have a kernel that supports it.

You will need a kernel that support overclocking as the stock one doesn't, to be able to use that. There is one @ xda(Toast's) but camera and a couple of other minor things have issues, so until the source code is released, overclocking won't be fully implemented into kernels. But I will say, I ran @ 1.2GHz yesterday and the difference is slightly noticeable but until the kernel is stable, it's not worth running it

EDIT: Just saw that MindFrost beat me to it lol

I would guess that OverclockWidget was released for phones that have a lower CPU than the EVO. Maybe a future update would allow us to do so with the proper kernel.

Edit: spell check

seriously... no need to overclock yet... NOVA is by far the most intensive game... GFX are like Halo 2 or better... Gameplay is about the same as halo 2... It has Onlint Multiplayer 4 ppl on 5 diff maps... Only through Wifi (maybe 4G)....
it runs GREAT i just flashed back to full stock... NO tweaks even... A bunch of backgrounded apps too....Linux owns
