Auto Recovery Mode available - No PC needed.

I added this to my tutorial, but I really think it needs to be brought to everyone's attention in a separate thread. If the mods disagree, I'm sorry and feel free to close this.

***Requirements***
Rooted phone (not unrevoked)
Custom Rom already running that shows the "Superuser Permissions" Icon
******************

Here's the basic instructions -

****AUTO RECOVERY METHOD**** Thanks to ClockworkMod @ XDA

There is now a way to do the recovery from the phone and load roms w/o the pc.
BTW - Using the unrevoked method does not count for rooting.
This only works for people who are rooted and have a custom rom that shows the "Superuser Permissions" icon.

1) Go to the Market and download/install "Rom Manager" by ClockworkMod
There is a free one and a donation one.

2) Open the app and select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"

3) Confirm your phone is an HTC EVO

After it installs, you can you can
- Install ROM from SD Card (if you have a rom loaded on your sdcard)
- Download ROM (There's some roms that work w/ the free version, and some you need the pay version of ROM manager)
- Manage and Restore Backups
- Partition SD Card

That's pretty much it. The program does everything for you. If you have any issues, then it's most likely because you didn't have a custom rom w/ the "Superuser Permissions" Icon showing. I've flashed about 20x's using this method and that's the only thing that ever causes an issue.

Re: Auto Recovery Mode available - No PC needed.

does one have to go into rom manager to get it to boot into full recovery each time or once this is done, it will boot into full recovery forever?

Re: Auto Recovery Mode available - No PC needed.

Does this recovery support making/restoring nandroids? Wiping..etc?

EDIT:

I bit the bullet and tried it....
Recovery Supports nandoids, wiping, flashing (duh), partitioning the card ( bring on app2sd!! )

Very similar to anon hero recovery or even the recovery using toasts method.

Cool.

Making a nandroid with it now.. will report back on how everything works...

EDIT 2: Works perfect. Damn..made a nandroid, flashed a .zip off my card..saaaweeet!
Flashing on the go! Props to ClockWorkMod!

Will this method not work if you used unrevoked but then uninstalled the app and then downgraded by using the two roms and then rooted following the toast method that you outlined?

It should work fine since you are rooted with toasts method.

Wow this great thanks a lot! I noticed it doesn't read backup made with the regular recovery...but this sill a savior if you don't have a computer close.

Good point - That works if you decide to go into recovery and you don't want to open the program again. I'll add that to the instructions.

FYI - If you open Rom manager again and repeat steps 4-7 it also works.

Where on the phone? The xda link says there is a download link but there isn't one.

maybe someone can elaborate.....the wiki says it makes a FULL system backup....so if I'm wanting to restore my email accounts, settings, wallpaper, scene, ringtones, etc.....would a nandroid backup be what I want?

Pretty sure this makes completely full backups... so yes, you would want this nandroid.

It takes a few minutes to complete the backup.

Ok, so now the next/obvious question...

I install OMJ EVO 2.1 Eclair v1.2 and do a nandroid backup in the recovery screen afterwards.

Tomorrow, there is new version of the rom OMJ EVO 2.1 Eclair v1.3, with some tweaks that I like so I decide to flash that rom.

Could I then go into recovery and restore my Nandroid backup to get all my stuff setup again? (i.e. wallpaper/email accounts/shortcuts/widgets)

Or, does this just work if I decide to re-flash OMJ EVO 2.1 Eclair v1.2 which is what the backup was for?

If the newer rom has updated apps or removed apps, your nandroid that has older versions or the apps that were removed..and it will put them back...

So restoring a nandroid wouldn't be a good idea...since it has EVERYTHING!!

You are almost there... at that screen with the red ? ..hold VOL UP and POWER and then you should get another menu and then select flash update.zip or whatever it is and it will fake flash and wala....recovery menu.

This works great for Custom ROM to Custom ROM. Not so great on rooted Stock ROM. For that stick with the manual recovery method. FastRX8 has updated his original thread and his videos.

You can do it from ROM Manager. This is how I went from OMJ 1.2 to 1.3. It was flawless.
Put the OMJ 2.1 v1.3 zip on your SD.
Use ROM Manager to boot into Recovery.
If you dont have a backup-then backup v1.2--just in case. Select nandroid.
Wipe 2X-data/factory reset. I'm conservative here-the update from 1.2 to 1.3 was small so you'd probably be safe without wiping. Your call.
Select install zip from sdcard.
Enjoy the awesomeness.

Just a head's up...
I re-wrote the instructions in post #1 because the program pretty much does everything for you now.
There is requirements for it to work correctly too.
