Google Voice for outgoing exclusively on EVO?

Anyone using Google Voice app to make outgoing calls exclusively on their EVO?

Considering it uses a data connection, it does not require or use up any of your plan's minutes.

You could just put your phone on the cheapest plan possible, without worrying about your minutes used to call land lines during peak hours.

I was considering this, especially since I have the free incoming calls perk on my plan, but want other's opinions.

Also, anyone use it's voice mail feature, replacing Sprint's?

I have have the everything data with 1500 shared minutes that is only charged to landlines and never come close to using even the smallest portion of them. And that is sharing with a family of 4 and we don't have a landline.

Same here, 1500 on 4 lines and never come close to using half our minutes. We have 10 days until the next cycle and we still have ~1300 minutes left. The free mobile to mobile is great since almost everybody we call is on a cell. The only reason we have a home phone is because it was free with our cable bundle.

I use Google Voice for my voicemail though.

I don't think GV uses data for outgoing calls...it uses your minutes.

to me the whole google voice thing is cool if your with another provider but sprint has free mobile to mobile no matter who the persons carrier is that your calling... and the only ppl i know with lan lines are senior citizens so even though im using the cheapest 1500 minute family plan i only use around 150 minutes a month and thats sharing 4 lines!! so with sprint i dont see a purpose

That's correct, it uses minutes. That is why you need the Free Pick 3 any numbers add-on. And Set your Google Voice # as one of the 3. Then all calls to or from your phone, via your GV number are not charged to your minutes!

Not sure if can still be added for free or not. Give it a try! I added it over a year ago.

If your calling any type of business, working with a bank/lender(many calls in the last few weeks for me buying a new house tomorrow,) calling your work, your using minutes.

For me, it helps a lot because I'm not on an everything plan with my TP2. After 22%discount I pay $43/month for 525min and unlimited data w/1000 txts.

There's a market app called Google Voice Dialer that will route your call through your data connection. Supposedly it's integrated into the dialer so you don't have to run the app to do it. It's $1.99. I haven't tried it myself. http://gvdialer.cpedia.net/

I am trying to use google voice as my primary number, but having no mms bugs me. Also, not being able to send sms to multiple recipients could be a problem once in a while. Having access to all your texts and voicemail online is really cool though.

Google Voice app has an option that automatically uses google voice program for voice calls.

You missed the point of the previous posts. The standard google voice app still uses your minutes. That market app will use data. After reading through it, you have to use it in conjunction with a free voip service like fring.

I am a HUGE google voice user and have been reading about this today as I had to switch off my SERO1250 plan to the 450 minute 69 dollar plan (well 79 after the data charge) and I have some 4.99 charge because of my 150 charge plan which I gotta deal with, but YES it does use your minutes and its going to really mess things up for me, Does sprint still support the fave 3 thing ?

I dont think we wil see gv doing viop type calls until (if) they integrate it with Gizmo.

For those who have pick 3 and unlimited incoming on their line or even just unlimited incoming, they have true unlimited calls with gv (like me) but the lack of mms is a HUGE killer for it. I honestly dont see why dont at least reroute mms to your gmail account that is tied to the gv account.

the lack of MMS is a big bummer I agree, but the security and control I have over giving people my google voice number is awesome!

Re: Google Voice for outgoing exclusively on EVO?

It's simple for me. My friend's get my Sprint number, anyone else gets Google Voice. I don't want to give up the unlimited mobile to mobile calls. Now I do have my sprint VM forward to google voice so Google gets all my voicemails. I know the EVO has VVM but transcribed voicemails with web access is better.

Re: Google Voice for outgoing exclusively on EVO?

same with most people, on family plan with 4 lines and average usage is like 200 minutes.

TWiST 06-07-2010 05:51 PM

Re: Google Voice for outgoing exclusively on EVO?

How do I get the VM setup to go to google voice, that would be awesome, and does it charge me minutes if I do that ?

Thanks!

Not sure if this is useful to anyone but here is a thread over in the general discussions section which has directions on how to make and receive free calls via wifi/3g.

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=100470

I sticked it awhile back and haven't had a chance to try and set it up.

Check it out!

sorry to burst your bubbles there, but i did this a year ago...but putting your google number only in the list wont work...you see, when you place a call from your google voice, it calls out a 717-xxx-xxxx number...you need to see your bill first, find the number it dials out (it is an static number and it displays it everytime you make a call with GV immediately after dialing)...make a note of that number, and call sprint and have them add that number to your free 3 unlimited, also leave our GV number in the list of free pick 3 for good measure....then you will have true unlimited calling with GV, otherwise, you will be using your plan's minutes...
trust me, been there, done that.

nico4k is correct. I just found out with my EVO. This is what I have been planning for like crazy!!! Find out what the other number is and add it to your favorite 3. Note, that new fav number will not take effect until your next billing cycle. What you could do to kinda get around it is use the dialer someone mentioned earlier for $1.99. http://gvdialer.cpedia.net/

This will allow you to fliter all phone numbers that you DO or DO NOT want to use the google voice dialer with (for me, I don't have it used on any mobile numbers since I have the mobile to mobile). For all other calls, it initiates the call between who you are calling and you. You then pickup the phone with your google voice calling you. Hence it's free. I like the Google Voice app that dials through the other line better, but until my next billing period, this is what I am doing.

I'll have to look into this. When I use Google voice I call 918-543-^%&* (which is set to one of my pick 3's) when it connects I then dial the # I want to call. I don't see where a 717 number would be called? May be different using the GV app with Android?

Everytime I try to set up GV for my VM, it says sprint doesn't offer this.

What's your secret?

I had the app on my Blackberry when it was 1st released and it does work different than you actually calling up your GV # from your phone than entering the # you want to call.

The advantages of the app is that it reads your full contact list and you dont have to manually dial numbers. At 1st (and still do when im around a computer) I would us the online site to call and text seeing how I already had all my contacts in my google account. I then realized I was able to actually to call my GV and dial directly from the phone but because at the time I didnt have my pick 5 and only unlimited incoming, it was pointless.

The work around for those who dont want to go through the hassle of finding that other number would be to dial from the GV web page or to call your GV #. Its great to have these options depending on your situation.
