Anyone having issues using aftermarket wall chargers with the EVo?

So, I was on the street and picked up a $10 aftermarket micro USB charger, never had any issues using these things with any device so far. They're half the price of the "official" wall chargers out there.

Get home and when I plug the Evo into it, it charges for a split second, and then says discharging and then stops charging.

I am at a friend's house so I try his charger which is for his Samsung device from MetroPCS, just so happens to be a micro USB as well. Same thing. I tried them both on 3 different plugs. I know the "official" charger works as I try that next (wanted a charger for work as well as for home, given that yes, the battery life of this Evo blows big giant monkey chunks).

Every charger EXCEPT the official HTC charger charges for a split-second and then stops and drains the battery.

Anyone else have any issues with aftermarket chargers and the Evo?

Thanks in advance.

I eventually had to go to Radio Shack to buy an igo with a tip. $30 for this setup. They wanted $120 for a 16Gb MicroSD card. But the salesman said, "well, it's on sale for $50" holy moly, no wonder they're looking for a buyer for the RS chain. $200 Monster cable anyone?

I have a feeling it is something about the pin out or the draw it needs, I have chargers for my Plantronics Headsets that will not charge the phone but the converter i have for mini usb to micro works fine.

Well, I can vouch that the iGo works fine with the A97 Pin adaptor in case anyone is looking into this solution.

The charger that came with the free bluetooth from Best Buy will not work. Light comes on for a second and then goes off.

IF anyone comes up with an idea as to why these are not working, I mean, seriously, the generic charges should be fine. The generic chargers were fine for the TP2, why now are we getting this silliness with the Evo?

I have a different issue with third party charges. They'll charge the phone, but when plugged in they make it lag like crazy. I have several small USB blocks (similar to the one that comes with the iPhone) that I purchased off eBay. They cause crazy lag. The HTC one and the official adapter I got with my iPad work fine. I also noticed some lag, but not as bad when using my iGo tip that I used with my Moment.

I know someone mentioned that non-oem chargers caused the screens to go bad in the hero so be careful!!

I too had issues with the charger from the free headset. Think I'm gonna spend the extra coin for known brand like the motorola car charger that best buy offered.

I have this exact problem with a generic USB block that I had for my TP2. However, plugging the USB cable into my computer to charge works fine.

Very strange indeed.

human here. (not a droid yet) but if this was WM I would say to go to the Notifications tab in .dotfred and disable any referring to rs232 or rndis.

what is happening is the phone is attempting to establish communication thru the usb, but since it can't it shuts down or ends up in a loop.

I found that if you turn the device off, it actually charges with an aftermarket charger or the Plantronics micro USB charger. There must be something in the OS that identifies non-PC or non-HTC chargers. I'mma root this bitch. I heard that Titanium backup can restore apps to new ROMs.

Love my EVO. Windows Mobile is a failure. iPhone is still a superior device.

Re: Anyone having issues using aftermarket wall chargers with the EVo?

i bought 2 of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...RK:MEWAX:IT://

my motorola ic502 wall and car charger work fine using the adapters.

also 2 generic ebay wall chargers i have both work using the adapters too.

EDIT: ok i see why there .99 the micro usb connector already tore away from the cord! P.O.S. (but hey it worked like a champ before that) my fault for yanking on the cord instead of the connector

Re: Anyone having issues using aftermarket wall chargers with the EVo?

A few of the Generic Nexus One chargers, initially display charging, discharging and then nothing at all with in 20-30 secs of plugging it to the phone.

It must have something to do with the pin configuration. If i take the cable that came with the phone and plug it into generic "USB" type call/car charger, it works just fine..

Same would be the reason for the phone lagging when you plug in other generic chargers, perhaps it has the data pins in and the phone thinks it's trying to sync to a PC.

EDIT: I used a Blackberry Charger and it's data cable, both worked, no problems.

I read about this a couple days ago here as I was trying to use the charger from my Plantronics headset

I am not willing to shut down my phone to charge it. I will just use good cables or adapters. The rocket fish adapter from BBY works fine FYI.

By chance what ma and voltage rating are these adapters you're using. The stock one is 1000ma at 5v. If you're going to spend $30 might as well buy the sprint travel charger that has a built in battery. It's $39.99 but with a premier discount its 29.99. I almost forgot to say this is the charger I'm using and it works as good as stock.

Re: Anyone having issues using aftermarket wall chargers with the EVo?

I definitely wasn't implying that anyone should turn off their EVO to charge it. I can't get enough of mine. It just proves that it's not a particular pinout.

In fact, I just rooted my bitch and ran dmesg under several scenarios:

unplugged
plugged into USB on computer
plugged into HTC stock USB to AC charger
plugged into Plantronics AC charger
Plugged into HTC stock USB to AC charger from TouchPro

The Android clearly runs a process to identify the manufacturer of the charger:

"Get USB ID PIN, mfg_df_serialno: 0000000000, usb_switch_dummy_serial_num_by_GPIO,usb_id_pin_gpi o 37

usb: mfg_USB_ID_pin_status: 1, ID_Pin 1:1,usb_switch_dummy_serial_num_by_GPIO
usb: suspend
usb: not AC charger."

But when the stock charger is plugged in:

"usb: AC charger"

It even instructs it to slow charge under certain circumstances.

Please. Someone hack the crap out of this.

I bought 2 6' belkin usb to microusb cables. I have one in the stock usb/ac adapter HTC provided with the Evo (for home), and the other is plugged in to the stock usb/ac adapter HTC provided with the sprint Hero (for work). Both charge without issue.

Re: Anyone having issues using aftermarket wall chargers with the EVo?

I've been using several different 1000 ma chargers with various micro usb cables and all seem to charge the phone just fine.

One thing I've noticed though is that I can only use the HTC Sync application with the HTC cable. I was wondering if anyone else has had any luck using HTC Sync with a non HTC cable. Thanks for any insight guys.

I got it!
so i too was having the same problem, i was like "wft?! thats such an apple move HTC, and apple doesnt even do that..." so i i was just messing around (while playing CODMW2), and turned my phone off just to soft reset it. and thought "lets see if it really does charge while the phone is off". (and it worked) so after about 15 mins of charging while the phone was off, i turned my phone back on bc i didnt want to miss any calls. i kept the plug in, and to my surprise, after the phone turned on, it continued to charge! so i thought, to keep it charging with the after market charger, just turn it off and then back on again and there you go! but i unplugged it, and plugged it back in and it still charged! and so far it works with that charger without having to power down and power back up! and it still works with the OEM charger! problem solved!....? someone else try it and see if it work...
also, this seems kinda long winded, but im kinda drunk right now... YAY!

I just took a look at the amperage on my plantronics charger and it does like 180ma...i'm guessing the phone tries to draw WAY more than the charger can output and the internal circuit protection in the charger kicks in, otherwise it'll just burn out.

Re: Anyone having issues using aftermarket wall chargers with the EVo?

Taken from a post I did at XDA inquiring about USB fast charging...

"the ma rating of the charger really makes no difference as the phone (and prior htc phones) will pull <500ma if they detect they are plugged into a computer or non-official charger and 1a if they detect an htc charger (which can even damage 500ma chargers). The way this is detected is through grounding of one of the microusb pins in the official charger (and indeed many generic chargers but not all will be detected this way). Absent this grounding (I forget which pin), it will charge at a slower speed. I know of cheap 500ma chargers which have been caused to smoke by attaching a cable with that grounding fooling the phone into thinking it is an oem charger. Many chargers labeled 1a will charge at the 500ma rate as well."

I had a feeling they were doing something like this. I wonder if it's the same way Apple does it. Has anyone tried a USB charger made for Apple devices to see if the EVO detects it as AC?
Also, is there any place to buy an official HTC wall charger?
