New OTA?

Just got prompted with a new OTA this morning for 2.08.651.3...

Tried doing a search and found nothing about this. Anyone else get this? What does it fix?

Re: New OTA?

I too received the OTA update request. I am downloading it now, but will not install it until I hear more about what it includes.

Re: New OTA?

I wonder - if it might be the security fix for the HTC loggers? (making your private information on your HTC EVO available to just about any rogue app that wants it?)

Massive Security Vulnerability In HTC Android Devices (EVO 3D, 4G, Thunderbolt, Others) Exposes Phone Numbers, GPS, SMS, Emails Addresses, Much More

I'm currently on 2.08.651.2 - and haven't seen the OTA request yet (checked manually too).
Edit: Got the update now - seems to be working ok (no noticeable changes)

I installed the update an hour ago or so. Everything works fine, no problems and didn't notice any changes by the update. I am thinking its the security update for the HTC logger.

I've noticed that my phone has a hard time turning the screen on when pressing the power button. Occasionally, I have to press it 2-3 times before the screen will turn on.

I have the 1.5, so I have to wait for the cook ROM to have an update right?

Re: New OTA?

This is the security update from HTC, as per Engadget.
Anyone know if it'll break the root?

Curb71 10-25-2011 11:35 PM

X2 anyone rooted install it and confirm it's okay?

Re: New OTA?

fyi---most custom ROMs already have a fix included for this security issue....and probably a better fix.

chong67 10-26-2011 12:19 PM

Re: New OTA?

Probably a better fix by HTC or custom ROM people?

dchamero 10-26-2011 04:02 PM

So, if I have your latest, there is no need to update anything?

Re: New OTA?

this update does not remove all the HTC spyware it just fixes the security hole. Those on custom ROMS with the spyware removed have a far better fix. from what I've read, if you have a custom ROM, the update will fail anyways, based on the checks it does.

I still dont see the update for my phone. I guess bc its a cook rom. Oh well.

Re: New OTA?

Yeah, after the last update with the adding of the spyware, ALL my further updates will not be from HTC.

yankees45us 10-27-2011 09:03 PM

Unless your rooted the only way to get updates is directly from htc. Plus they didn't install spyware, they just installed something that had a defect and they turned around and fixed it. I'm sure all these developers won't let htc get away with something that bad and they'll think twice when creating software updates in the future.

ScottsRom say no need to do the OTA update.

Re: New OTA?

I think people take the tracking thing a little far sometimes. People have gone so far as to remove basic functionality of the software...like keeping track of what apps you use the most and putting them in the 'favorites' portion of the app drawer. It's no different than the Windows 7 start menu function (and good luck seeing the code for that). Some have also removed the ability to use native screenshot because they somehow came up with the idea it was being sent to amazon (why would anyone care to look at what you're taking a screenshot of is beyond me). HTC knows the software better than anyone, and they aren't without flaws, but I still think they'll be the best ones to patch any problems/vulnerabilities. Just my 2 cents.

The update modifies over 200 files (and maybe multiple things -.smail's, etc.- per file). I doubt any rom cook/developer has edited that many apk's, etc. You either need to have a stock rom to apply the update or push the updated files yourself (and probably break something that was 'modded' in the custom rom you're using). Eventually people will transfer the 'custom rom' changes to the new base files.

I called Sprint and asked them what the update was for and one of the 3 reps I talked to said that it potentially fixes the phone random reboot issue. I know my phone would random reboot sometimes but since I've updated I haven't had any issues. Maybe It's true. We will see.

Re: New OTA?

So HTC know betters than all the cook ROM out there?

Funny I find cook ROM to be so much better than what HTC can do.
