Can you not just have both the gmail on and the normal mail pulling in gmail also? This will make the lockscreen tell you if your have gmail but you can just always choose to open through the gmail. Sorry that wasn't well written.

Is it silly of me to be a little bothered by the wasted space taken up by the downloading of emails in the mail app that I will never look at since I'd like to continue to use the gmail app? Or used processor time? Maybe there's an auto-delete after x days I can find in the settings...

It sounds like a good workaround for now anyway.

I whole heartedly agree with draghn. No way I'm downloading all of my email twice just for a notification. Especially when I get notifications in the task bar already.

Also, I have 4 email accounts. Doing this will only give me one notification, with no way of knowing which account it's from.
