6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

I am curious if you guys that are experience major flashing issues with 6.5 could take a poll. By problems I mean major ones like not being able to get past the bootscreen, random hard resets, crashes, etc. Thanks.

here are couple options that may help you. I know a couple people have tried them and it worked.

1. How to resolve problems with flashing 6.5 roms like random resets, not getting past first screen post flash, odd quirks that are not reported:

If you flash a lot, their will be pieces of old roms/cab installations/etc that remain in the internal storage, specifically in the program files folder of internal storage. There are two options that may fix this, no guarantee but it beats not doing anything.

Option 1:
Before I flash another rom, I go into the program files(internal storage) and delete all old folders from previous cab installations except for a couple that dont seem to interfere like livesearch. this has worked for me flashing 6.1 roms and 6.5 roms. then flash shipped, hard reset, flash the custom rom of your choice, clear storage one more time if you like.

Option 2:
Or you can backup your internal storage files to your desktop (pictures in DCIM & other folders, music, video, cabs, etc. use Pim backup for text messages, calls, etc. whatever you want saved. then I do the same thing. Flash the shipped rom, clear storage and format internal storage, flash the custom rom, clear again. I made this suggestion to someone else tonight that was not getting past the first screen flashing a 6.5 rom, and it worked so hopefully it will work for you. good luck.

option 3:
try Mitchell's suggestion from post 17. thanks Mitchell.

Try flashing your shipped rom first, then Mighty's
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=38999

The go one to a 6.5 rom. That way finally worked for me, I took me a lot of tries as well.

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

I had problems in the past, not anymore though.

I think it would be interesting to look at methods vs occurance of problems? Many people say flash stock first etc etc. I have found that upon taking a few extra steps such as this seems to eliminate flashing related issues for the most part, (namely the issue with random hard resets).

I usually implement the following method, its probably a bit of overkill but I flash a lot and have not experienced a single issue since following these steps. BTW, I often format internal storage upon a new flash as well.

1. Enter Bootloader
2. Flash Stock
-let customizations run
3. Enter Bootloader
4. Flash Custom
-let customizations run
5. Hard reset
-let customizations run

Yes, very true. I personally have only had one time that I needed to enter bootloader to flash back to shipped. I usually use option 1 and never have problems. Just have noticed recently many threads with users having problems with flashing to 6.5. Curious to see what the trend is with the poll.

i also use option 1 and have not had any problems. i also do this even for new versions of a chef's rom.

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

I just flash three times in a row, and then do a hard reset if I feel like it.
But that seems to do the trick.
I setup all of the initial customizations(time zone, screen calibration)
all the way through as if I wasn't going to flash again.
I haven't had any of the problems people usually report
in the rom's threads doing it that way.
But after about three to four different roms I flash to stock
and then redo the three flashes.

I also flash directly from bootloader instead of establishing an activesync connection first.

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

I would think this poll's results could be a bit misleading, as there may be more sprint users out there compared to Alltel and Telus. Just taking a guess though. Could be pretty interesting results nonetheless. Never had any real issues on Sprint, but interesting poll either way!

Guys, I'm at a loss......

I'm new here and to ROM flashing, but I'm no computer noob and I just CAN'T for the life of me get 6.5 to work on my Diamond.

I got the instructions to a T, I made sure I got fairly reputable ROMs that were not Carrier specific other than mine (Telus) and over all, the flashig process works fine. But any and all 6.5 ROMs crashed at one point or another, usually really quickly after the customization - if that far - and then I get the boot screen hang thingy.

I flashed back to stock, worked fine. Flashed Mighty's 6.1, worked fine. But whether it's Mighty's, Juicy or Calkulin's 6.5, monumental crash. What am I doing wrong??? I've followed all the tips I could find here, and it still crashes :(

I'm beyond my capacities I guess......

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

This is the method that I used,

1. Enter Bootloader
2. Flash SHIPPED Telus rom
3. Two Hard resets
4. Flash Custom 6.5 rom
5. Two Hard Resets
6. Pray to God it gets past Customization

I have repeated these steps atleast 25 times at min. On the last try it finally worked, and has every since. To be totally honest, I'm F**king confused

may i suggest groove roms.. they work great.. and also some instructions say to flash back to the stock sprint rom.. probably to prevent problems with new ones..

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

I flash quite often (except this past week), but I haven't had any problems like you guys have. I don't flash stock, hard reset or none of that fancy stuff. The only problem I have is when I leave that \internal storage\DIAMIMG.nbh in place then I try to flash from vista. But that's my own fault. :)

Hi everyone, my name is don and I'm a flash-a-holic, and all I do is flash what I want on my device and never, never had any problems. Other than that I'll pass...

Flash shipped not stock.

I agree in most cases you don't need to do all this flashing to shipped/clearing storage process, but I also think it really has to do with how close the rom is to the shipped release. For example, I have never needed to flash shipped before moving from one RSTG to another RSTG release, but if I tried to do the same thing with others, there would be problems. Like tf errors, soft resets becoming hard resets, etc. Can't explain it but could it be that you keep your rom close to stock. Just wondering? thanks.

Good Point. funny thing is I noticed a lot more Telus users having problems in the 6.5 threads but you're right, it's going to be misleading.

That's actually what I did, I just misunderstood the difference ;) I actually got the upgrade ROM direct from HTC for Telus, so I'm 100% sure this is what whould be on my phone OOB.

That's a bit why I chose to respond; I was really under the impression that Telus seemed much more problematic...

You know what, it worked!!! Thanks! I'm happy again :)
EDIT: I spoke too fast I guess... It crashed on me after about 3 hours of use, now I can't get past the screen alignment (but I didn't flash or hard reset...?). I'm giving up, I'm going to go back to shipped rom and that's that :(

Sounds like Mitchell has the fix. Especially for you guys that are having no luck flashing to 6.5. this seems to be the only way right now.

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

Im thinking that this issue might have to do with ported xips in general and or the payload that their inserted into.
I just keep the ship nbh file in internal storage, and flash to that every few builds. I never go past the first tap here

boy am i in a pickle (first time using that saying) ever since i loaded the first release of juicy 6.5 rom my diamond has not been the same.. im getting all of those random freezes and resets.. gone through every possible fix and nothing works.. most 6.1 roms will load up but thats when i get all those random freezes and other issues.. that one thing that every fix has pretty much mentions is to load the sprint shipped rom.. that i cannot do, everytime it loads its hangs on boot and the customization is completed and reboots.. not joke, from 2pm till 3 am i did a continuous loop by loading the shipped rom onto my internal storage and just flashing constantly until i got it.. well i never got it.. the entire day consisted of hardresets and loading into the bootloader.. i figured i would get that random "AHHH FINALLY" well the ahh finally never happened so im back using mightys r3born, but of coarse nothing is working like it used to i am constantly getting freezes that i never had in the past.. incase your wondering what steps ive taken all i can really say is just use the search function cause i have tried every possible fix that has worked for someone.. however, they just havent worked for me.. right now my main goal is just to load the shipped sprint rom back onto my device cause i feel that would end all my problems.. but no matter what i try it hangs on bootup.. still searching for solutions.. preciate this thread being created, offers hope

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

You gotta use the Rom Update Utility that your carrier gives you and not just the NBH file for the stock shipped ROM because it has extra stuff it seems lik.

hey Toenail, well your not alone, there are several people that are getting this problem. I believe you when you say you tried everything. heck, guys like Mitchell and SmokinJoe who definitely have flashed several times in this forum, are also experiencing problems that are unexplained. Just to be sure, did you try Mitchell's suggestion in post 17? this way you get on 6.5 if you want. also, instead of flashing the shipped rom from internal storage, can you try to do it through active sync? Not sure if this will do anything though. good luck and hopefully there will be more good suggestions that come through.

toenail 05-25-2009 09:42 PM

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

yeah i did try what post #17 suggests, flash shipped rom and then a 6.5.. done that and have had some success.. however the freezing and contant reboots will not go away, i have not been able to load the sprint shipped rom not once.. have gotten a few 6.5 and even 6.1 roms however its a hit and miss game, sometimes they go p***** the boot screen, sometimes they dont, but they ALWAYS freeze and do the random reboots... and yeah i have flashed both the activesync and from the internal hdd without success.. that update utility was mentioned and theres one thing i have done so im going to search sprints site again and see if i can locate that.. i have cruised the site a few times looking for something like that with no luck.. as always ill keep ya posted cause whatever works for me im sure would help others..

well i checked out that sprint rom update utility from the sprint site and that pretty much directs you to the htc website to download the latest rom update.. well the badnews is yeah tried that one.. ive tried different roms ranging from stock, shipped, and whatever else is out there.. i guess i have one question though.. is it safe to load a shipped rom from other carriers or do i need to stick with sprint downloads? ohh and that badnews i talked about, its just badnews to me cause my phones the one thats jacked up, im sure its just news to whoever else is reading this.. but it does make me sad :(

Quick question, what radio are you using currently? the sprint radio 1.11.00f or telus 1.04.05v? or which one. Reason I ask is Juicy mentioned in his thread(post 3317) that the telus radio has drivers in it that may cause issues. Very interesting but I figured I would share with you guys as well.

History: Started out with MR4.8 initially, then tried MR5 beta (which worked fine). Flashing to shipped first before each ROM of course. Went to shipped, then MR5 release (not beta) and had endless freeze/lock ups.

This finally fixed me up (shipped, R3Born, then MR5)...but not immediately.
Still encountered lockups, particulary in Opera and Comm Manager for whatever reason. I was ready to start the process over yet again...
However, I then installed Diamond Tweak and changed HTC Dialer to WM and also set Opera advanced settings and unchecked plugins, and it hasn't locked up on me since.

Only thing I have not yet had work is Youtube. Would be great if I could get going, though. Tried deleting Youtube folder from Internal Storage and soft reset, but still no luck. Mostly get Cannot play video message. However, at times and only over data (not even wi-fi) I get video but no audio. Not often though.

Any ideas?

Yep, all the things you have done are spot on. changing the htc dialer is a big thing as well as disabling plugins in opera. Opera/Flash are making progress but its still not there yet so why bother with the lockups. the youtube thing is not fixable though. Its a known issue in Mighty5 but it will be fixed in the next release most likely. Glad to hear you are on track.

Re: 6.5 flashing problems, potential fix and Poll

I am on Telus and generally have had few problems flashing 6.5 ROMS either over a previous 6.5 build or over shipped.
Groove 5 was a notable exception..I really had to fight with it. As it happened, before I did my first flash I decided it was time to go back to shipped and it hung after the second restart (after customizations) I tried 3 times over a reflash of the shipped ROM, one time I even tried extracting the files from the exe with same result.
On the fourth try I used the exe file and put the phone into bootloader before flashing. This time not even a hiccup.

Go figure
