Forcing 1x over EVDO

I'm wondering if the phone might get a little better battery life if it didn't have to switch from EVDO to 1x everytime I make/receive a call or send a text and then switch back to EVDO when I'm done. The only way I know to force my phone to 1x is to force it to roam. Is there another way? Am I crazy for thinking this might save a little battery? I've searched for an answer but having a hard time since the search engine won't let me look for "1x" due to the 3 letter thing.

Yeah, you should be able to select either EVDO or 1X or Hybrid. Let me see if I can find that.

Change
HKLM/software/OEM/phonesetting and change hidden mode operation page to 0

Then Start Menu-->Settings-->Personal-->Phone
Tap on the Services tab
Select Mode of Operation then tap Get Settings
Tap 1X only, then ok

I don't have "hidden mode operation" under OEM. Could this have something to do with me running MightyROM? Maybe I ought to post in there?

Re: Forcing 1x over EVDO

I am running Mighty ROM also but on a TP ( 4.8 )
If it is not in there, add

Well I guess that I do not have that one either.
I have HiddenModeOperationPage That is the one that I changed to 0

ahh I'm a dummy. The value was there and I changed it. Worked like a charm. Thanks my friend.:headbang:

Now I just need to test my theory of better battery life.

It'd be nice if it ony went EVDO during browsing.

Let us know if its better.
IMHO I highly doubt it'lll be a noteworthy increase.

Yeah, that would be ideal. It's kind of a pain when I want to use the internet. But on the other hand it works great when I'm at home. In EVDO I only get 0-1 bars, while in 1x only I get 3.

If you do EVDO only expect to have a problem with SMS since it uses 1X. You probably wont receive any text unless you make or receive a phone call.

so if u force 1x then there shouldnt be a text delay like the problem the tp has been having?

It should be set to hybrid. Look up how data is transferred through a cellular network. This will help you with useless tweaks. You can only use EVDO on a sprint (or whomever your cellular carrier is) tower(s), and forcing it will only cause delays in other services not transmitted through EVDO, mainly 1X.

Thanks for the advice. I actually only force it to 1x because I get better reception at home that way. I think the only time to force evdo would be while tethering.

I'm not sure why you would refer to this as a "useless tweak". It's perfectly useful. Take data out of the picture. At home my phone switches from evdo to 1x non stop. With this tweak I can force 1x on my phone to stop the switching, which save me battery. Also I get a stronger signal. Before this tweak my only option to force 1x was to roam.

Re: Forcing 1x over EVDO

so whats the draw backs of forcing 1x....just slower data speeds? and do you have to do the registry edit, or can you just force it in 1x through the settings>personal>phone?

and has anyone ever confirmed this saves battery life?

The only draw back I can see is slower data speeds. You do have to do the reg edit to get the menu on your phone. A cab has been posted, but I haven't tried it. I can say it has saved me battery at home because my service signal is very weak on evdo, no bars. When I force the 1x I get 3 bars. I have not used it in all day situation outside of my home. It would be my best guess to say it will save battery because normally your phone is in evdo. As soon as you send or receive a text you switch to 1x. Also if you make a call. I think this constant switching between 1x and evdo (if you text a lot like me) must take a toll on the battery. I could be wrong, but this is my best guess. It works for me. My advice is if you think you may benefit from it, try it. If you don't you can just use your phone in hybrid.

well i'm on juicy rom 4.4 and this option is already in my phone, so I guesss i don't need the reg. tweak

Juicy must build it into his roms. Mighty had the roaming built in, but not this. Anyway give it a go and report back, good or bad. Thanks.

Someone in the MightyRom 4.8 thread talked about having a mort script that does this-the phone is set to 1x, but switches over to EVDO when you start using data.

This is obviously useful, but I don't know what to do with it... Because I don't know what a mort script is...

Re: Forcing 1x over EVDO

Just Google Mortscript and do a search for "texting and battery life" without the quotes and see if my thread comes up. It's not automatic but you can switch it pretty easy. Just place a shortcut in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

I don't like this tweak b/c when somebody sent me a text, I would get like 3 of the same texts for every text they gave me...it was weird....so I guess hybrid it is!

I dont think this would help any because talking on the phone u use 1x and it still drians it big time.

I guess this is the tweak I cabb'd up that MrObvious is talking about.

You need mortscript installed, I think most ROMs have some form of it(if not, intxROM has it /end advert)

Just install the cab, it places a shortcut on your start menu.

This will only work if Mode of Operation is 8 settings down on the menu.

Re: Forcing 1x over EVDO

Yeah that's actually what I use. Thanks intx. I'm just teaching the n00bs to search. :p

But yeah if you see over 100 texts a day I would suggest this, or if you live in a fringe area.

Re: Forcing 1x over EVDO

Hope this isn't a complete hijack of this thread but the following seems related. I've asked this question on a couple forums with no response:

Although my Sprint Diamond Touch shows generally pretty good reception (good bars) most places, the signal strength is fairly weak at my home, which is in a bit of a valley. Apparently whenever the phone has to cycle between communication modes (EVDO to 1X? and back) due to weak signal, it comes out of hibernation and lights up the screen for the default period, goes off, and then after a short period comes on again. This can happen every several minutes indefinitely. I wouldn't mind, I suppose, but this is a little disconcerting in the middle of the night, and I hate to run down the battery unnecessarily.

This behavior does not occur away from home (or when all comms are turned off) which tends to reinforce the idea that it is signal strength related.

Do I have any options, other than keeping the phone in airplane mode when I'm at home and have home phone available? Any software or setting available to defeat this turn-on-screen-when-signal-strength-low behavior?

Or am I mistaken and the screen is cycling for another reason? Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Forcing 1x over EVDO

Just run the Intx Mortscript cab (install Mortscript first) and leave it in 1x. That or put your phone next to the window. *grin*

Hey guys,
So I installed this (8 down) .cab, but when I go to run it, the following error occurs:
Unknown command 'sendspecial'
Line SendSpecial("Down")

Any ideas what's wrong?

I'm running MR4, which should be WM 6.1

I installed Mortscript. Without it the program doesn't even start.

Maybe there is a problem with the version of Mortscript that I have. I got v4.0 from the internets somewhere.
Are they all NOT created equal?
