Battery Killer
I just got the Diamond about a week ago and cant keep the battery life for anything. I turn it on at 3:30am. By 7:30am it is down to 70%. By 10:30am its at 20%. I am hardly using the phone except for the occasional phone call because I don't want to deplete the battery before my shift at work is over. Everything is stock on the phone, right out of the box. $600 phone doesn't even come with a car charger either. Go figure.

Re: Battery Killer
flash mighty rom, it'll help.

Re: Battery Killer
Have you fully charged and fully discharged your battery a few times? Battery life tends to be better once you do that.
After doing that myself, I'm getting about two days of battery life (compared to one before). |
Re: Battery Killer
Yet another battery thread....
It's a known problem that the stock phone ROMs are bad on the battery. The best solution for most people is to flash the Telus Radio (in the radio thread) and a custom ROM (as 95% of tweaks are common to almost all of the ROMs). |
Re: Battery Killer
Its a brand new phone. I don't want to put a custom ROM on it (yet). I did that on my Mogul and it didn't increase the battery life any. I have nothing running in the background except Activesync which I shut down when I start the phone. I fully charged the battery. I was told by a friend that works for Sprint to NOT leave it on charge for more than 2 hours or a full charge, whichever comes first. I used to plug my Mogul in when I got home from work and leave it charging all night. I could get almost 2 days from a full charge with my Mogul. I think I will just get a couple extra batteries to keep with me.

The stock poll interval is 5,000.... I thought it should be changed to 20,000 But mine is set at 25,000. I'm using Confliper's rom |

hmm everywhere i read said to change FROM 5000 TO 20000. thats 5, or 20 seconds. thats how often the phone polls the battery to measure battery life. Seems redundant... but the phone checking for battery is actually a huge battery killer. change it to 20000. I did it on mine and I got a bit of a boost. I unplugged my phoneat 10 am and by 5 I was at 60%. with about 40 texts, 5 mins of call, two youtube videos, and nothing else. battery jsut sucks on this phone, no matter the tweaks. kinda regretting leaving my mogul. |
Re: Battery Killer
Some programs kill battery, this is not a full list:
Opera Internet Explorer QuickGps Biotouch OMC Sensorlock AlbumSearch AudioManager Skype Fring Windows Media Player (even not playing anything) Garmin ...... These are good programs that you can let them run without impact on battery: Jbed java midlet manager (all other midlet managers suck) Opera Mini Gmail (older than V2.0) Xten Lite ImapPusherService TomTom (when in background) Go get the free FdcSoft TaskManager3.1, then you can see which programs are running and using lots of CPU. acbTaskMan can even show the history of CPU usage. Bottom line: smartphones are always on even when the screen is black. Many programmers do not follow the guidelines of putting their programs into standby mode or use too much polling instead of push and thus use too much CPU and thus battery. You must close those offending programs after each and every use to ensure good battery life. |
Re: Battery Killer
Since i've turn off my data connection, and not have it ruuning alway. I'm pleased with the result, the battery life is easily, twice what it was before
|
Re: Battery Killer
Data connection itself does not affect battery but the programs that use data do. Mostly ActiveSync, set it to manually pick up.
|
Re: Battery Killer
I have my data connection turned off along with active sync and any other programs I'm not using. The battery did not last 6 hours today with normal use of a few phone calls. I took it into Sprint and they GAVE me 2 extra batteries. Now if I could only get HTC to give me a car charger.

Re: Battery Killer
How many radio bars on your diamonds?
When I was using the stock Sprint ROM or GrooveRom, I only got 0-1 bars. Since MightyRom3.9, I've been getting full bars all the time and battery life has been great, at least 8 hours with heavy use or 24 hours with light use and gmail push. |
Re: Battery Killer
Using telus radio, Calc's ROM, and changed the battery polling to 30000. My battery last over two days with moderate use.
Most important thing is to make sure you charge your battery correctly from the first day, and you CAN leave your battery charging overnight (not just 2 hours) without negative effects to the battery. It's actually better for lithium's not to let it run all the way down, and to charge often. |

Re: Battery Killer
Change the radio, change the ROM, change the poll interval. I could change things all day and hope to get the battery to last at most a day with normal use. Do you think its acceptable to have a stock out of the box setup phone to last less than 6 hours?

Re: Battery Killer
I just stripped everything out of mine, like the touchflo and have the system as barebone as possible. My phone is faster and the battery lasts a lot longer.

Your best option... if you want results... is, yes, upgrade some stuff. |

Its a phone, I make calls on it and use the Internet. Touchflo doesn't enable me to do these things, in fact it only slows me down. So I see absolutely no need to use it. It makes my phone slow, less responsive and further prone to failure. I instead strip my stock rom and make it fast and reliable. I get better battery life also. |
Re: Battery Killer
Hello All,
First of all, I am not here to bash...just to wish. I have had many Windows Mobile Devices before going to a BB 8130 Pearl. Had that for 1.5 yrs. Went back to HTC's Pro and Diamond (2x). It amazes me how much of a "battery hog" Windows Mobile Devices are. I have recently switched back to a BB 8330 with US Cellular. For an example, I was on an Amtrak train for 7 hrs on a slow weather delayed train from Chicago to Stl. I literally surfed the web, instant messaged, talked on the phone and emailed for the entire time except two short snack stints of about 15 minutes each. I also used it on the 1 hr ride to my house, quite extensively. When I arrived at home, it was @ 45%! I am not embellishing even a little bit! I really wanted to stay with my WM device as I liked the threaded texting and the larger amount of software readily available. My problem was also was that to send and receive email, there was no filtering with having an exchange server. BlackBerry filters! Also, for whatever reason, BB devices makes much less of a task of internet, text, email and phone use from a battery standpoint. THIS IS NOT A NOTE TO PUSH FOR BLACKBERRY DEVICES USE....MORE OF A PLEA FOR OTHER COMPANY'S TO LEARN SO THAT THEY CAN COMPETE! That said, I would suggest "might rom" 3.9 or higher. It helped the battery issues emmensly. Hopefully someday soon, I'll be back as an active member of this very helpful forum. |

This is my final post and I can appreciate your comment.
Just wishing to help someone as frustrated as I was even with all the great help on this board. |
Re: Battery Killer
Guess I'll just stick with carrying a couple extra batteries with me at all times. At least they didn't charge me for them.
|
Re: Battery Killer
Several users including myself have already told you what to do to your Diamond to get good battery life.
There is no need to carry several batteries. My Sprint Diamond last a couple days without charging. |
Re: Battery Killer
I'm new here and new to the HTC Diamond (Alltel).
I can already see issues with the battery as I'm constantly killing apps because they just go to the background when you close them. Is flashing the ROM a big deal? Can I do that on a CDMA phone? (I assume Alltel uses that). Is there an easy to follow tutorial/guide and which ROM? I just found this site, I will dig around for answers after work tomorrow when I have more time. I am interested in doing something though. |
Re: Battery Killer
Really and truely, my phone went 2 days without needing a charge (at the end of the second day, threw it on there because didn't know what tomorrow would bring.)
My "secret" is making the Long Press of the End Key shortcaut to termintate the data connection every time I am not using it and I saved battery BIG TIME! Also, I keep the apps closed and my running programs down to nothing but ActiveSync. (It keeps popping up). I am going to use the interval hack and see what that does. |
Re: Battery Killer
I hear if your turn the phone off it will last 2 days on a battery charge! ](*,)
Seriously, this phone has horrible battery life and unfortunately the only solution I found was to run Mighty's custom ROM's. I can usually get through a 10 hour work day with mild use of the phone with out it dieing on me. Flashing a custom ROM is not something I wanted to do but I am stuck with the phone and had to do something to make it work. I have to laugh at all the suggestions on how to get more life out of the battery, turn this off, don't use that, disable this. Why did we pay all this money for a phone that you cannot utilize the features on? Even with custom ROM, following all the suggestions here and minimal use of the phone there is NO WAY I can get more then a day out of my battery. HTC/Sprint should be recalling all Diamonds in my opinion as they do not live up to anywhere close to the suggested battery life. . |

Link to Alltell CDMA Diamond rom. Start there. |
Re: Battery Killer
When I first got the mogul it didnt even come close to lasting a half day. With multiple stock rom updates from HTC, I eventually could last 3-4 days on the same charge.
|
Re: Battery Killer
what's your point? we already know the batt life sucks, they've told you what you can do to help make it better; at this point if your unhappy with your options you should return the phone.
