Can keypad be default when in calls?

When making and receiving calls, I frequently need to hit numbers, pound keys, etc. Between the screen going black and then having to fumble for that keypad key, I have lost several calls to and from voicemail and have had to re-dial and start over. Is there a way to make the phone app default to bring the keypad up? If I need to see the status screen, then I would switch.
