On the subject of heat-shield: I can't see how the reportedly omitted shield could hurt the battery life. If anything, NOT having a shield and feeling the heat on the outside means that the heat is radiating out and dissipating, which can HELP battery life (lower internal temp). In general, higher temp=higher resistance=more power needed to drive the circuit. This is why superconductors need to operate at very low temps. Unless there is something I'm not seeing, I can live with the heat and would chose to go without the shield.

heat kills batteries. its a know fact that's why it affects battery life. the heat shield helps keep the heat from leaking to the battery area. its 100% true that the lack there of a heat shield can and will affect battery operation and performance.

High temps affecting battery performance is academic, but if the shield is behind the keypad, I don't see how it can keep the heat from transfering to the battery. Unless there is an air gap or ventilation, a shield can become a heat sink, which can AIDE in transfering heat from one side to the other.

In any event, when the electronics (lower) portion of the phone gets hot, the battery's temp does not go up significantly. I've run two phones with the covers off, along with various routines, and observed that the battery will mostly increase in temp due to high-drain (CPU, radio transmission, etc.), and not from conductive heat. I spent several hours with an infrared pyrometer measuring both the electronics portion and the batteries and found that the batteries stay relatively cool.

it evens out heat distribution. just like the cooling on pc's allot of high end servers offer heat shields on both sides of the board for this reason. heat distribution, evenly means it disipates quicker and reduces hot spots.

a hot spot on the radio side will leak through PCB and cause a hot spot on the back. thats why radio heat causes the back to heat up as well.

i want to see what is the result of the discussion betwen Sprint and HTC? Officially announce that the early birds were screwed and they would add the heat plate in newer batch of phones or everybody gets a free exchange.

I really hope they will do a swap for a shiny new Diamond but I wont hold my breath. I do however hate the heat problem but, I checked the battery and it's not the battery that gets hot. Its where the compartment is where they have the memory on the pcb but I guess that is whats leaking. The front of my phone also gets really hot, if you turn your phone over and check the battery it will be nice and cool. The area below it may burn the f*ck out of you though. just my 2 cents.

Yes Toinejuan you are correct . It is a shame that a unit was put out with total disregard. I'm calling sprint to order my return kit so its in stock when the touch pro releases.

athle1c same here, I already got the authorization to return my Diamond do it will be outside of the 30 day window. I had 7 Apaches this year a Mogul, now a Diamond and next a Pro, hopefully that won't have any issues.

What if i bought my diamond off someone on craigslist (like ebay). Could i expect a exchange if they offer one?
