Tethering with Telus

So Telus has no tethering plans for the phone. Apparantly they charge you $8 per meg download when tethering. Which is completely outrageous. That is actually the same cost if I was using my phone to Tether while in the States. It should be cheaper in Canada and on their network.

But my question is this. How do they know I'm tethering and not actually browsing with my phone? Are they able to actually make the distinction and bill you appropriately?

If someone know it, it will be good to know ! If i dont use it much (only when there is absolutely no wifi available and for short period), is it possible for them to know it ?

Just replied to the Sprint users, now it's time to help the home team!
Yeah, they know and they'll bill you. Do a search here or at XDA for WMWifiRouter. I use it everyday for internet on the go and it gets me around the $8.00/MB phone-as-a-modem charges.
Hope that helps!

Re: Tethering with Telus

Interesting, how come using WMWifiRouter hides the fact you are tethering?

tobeychris 10-08-2008 08:40 AM

Re: Tethering with Telus

They don't really know. There's a possibility of them knowing if you use WModem... so don't. All custom ROMs should have Internet Connection Sharing... use that.

Re: Tethering with Telus

So outta curiosity if you're running a custom rom, and just plug in via usb and use internet sharing would that also hide the fact you are tethering?

Did you even read the post above yours?

Does anyone know how to get ICS on a stock telus rom? I would like to just install it instead of putting a custom rom (plan on exchanging it for the pro in a couple of days)

Tobey, I know I sound like a **** asking this again I just want to be completely sure before being charged a Mother * huge bill. I have Juicy's 2.0 ROM. When I plug it in, if I click the third option, use as internet sharing modem, Telus will not charge me for tethering?

Re: Tethering with Telus

It's not black and white; Telus will probably not notice, but it's use at your own risk. Do what I did: connect with it, download 1 or 2 megs worth of data and wait for your next bill to see what happens.

You can also check your data use when you login at mytelusmobility.com if you're not patient enough to wait for your next bill.

Yes but I wonder if you start using it more and more and start racking up the megs if then they will charge?

I had to download a 230MB file onto 2 laptops for a presentation last month and ended up using WMWifiRouter because the wireless in the hotel was busted and there was no-one there overnight to fix it. I did the download onto both laptops at the same time and averaged 170 k/sec on each one. No charge on my bill, even though I can see the 460MB download on mytelusmobility.com.
I've been using WMWifiRouter since August and ripped through 1.64GB in that time, probably less than a quarter of the total being acutal browsing or other data stuff on the phone itself. No charge. Imagine that at $8.00/MB!!

I thought wmwifirouter did not show up on your bill I thought it was undetected by provider?

It isn't, my point is just be cautious and test it out to make sure whatever you're using is working for you before you do any major data transfer otherwise at 8$/MB you could have a nasty surprise.

Re: Tethering with Telus

Hey guys,

I'm sorry if my question is a bit redundant, but i just wanna make sure i don't get charged just in case.

I'm currently using Juicy 4.3 ROM on my telus diamond, and i've seen that "3rd option" when you connect your phone to your laptop...i just wasn't sure what that was.

so my question is, would it be better to try tethering by clicking that option, or by using WMWifiRouter? (i.e. which option would give me better assurance that I won't be charged for using data if i connect to my laptop)?

Thanks for the help everyone, as it's always greatly appreciated.

(p.s- sorry once again if i'm being redundant lol)

here are the files for people who don't want to run a custom ROM. The ICSInstall.CAB is the internet sharing program itself, the other one is so internet sharing becomes an option in the pop up menu (HTC diamond) when plugging into a computer. I hope this helps.

PS you need activesync 4.2 or higher and you may need to disable USB connections: open actvesync, file, connection settings, clear the "allow usb connections" check

Unfortunately the TCP protocol is always looking for tethering connections. The best thing do is, if you have an unlimited data plan you can use PDAnet. It bypasses (Hides) the TCP protocol and enables you to surf the web using your unlimited data plan. The reason for this is the mobile browsers on phones today, pull the same amount of data as your desktop. There for there is no way of telling using the software!

Re: Tethering with Telus

guys do not tether your devices. It will charge you $30/mb because its Pay Per Use on data . Do it if you really need to. I am in the DNA dept and i know all about the data inquiries. I just dont want you guys to inquire 3 mb for 90 bucks or maybe 100mb for $3000. I see this all the time I'm just warning you now. Also i think the 8/ mb is just for us roaming.

Re: Tethering with Telus

I'm glad you aren't the one making the rate plan choices on my account.

Let me know when Telus gets Deep Packet Inspection and stops deleting ICS from their ROMs, replacing it with the useless WModem.

I have been dealing with telus for years now and 8$/mb for data within the network as well. As for the tethering, well, obviously you haven't done your research that well. PDAnet overrides the protocol that tells the telus servers that tethering is being done and if you check the data usage between your desktop and your HTC phone, the numbers are almost exactly the same. I have been doing for a while with no charges on my account! WMWiFiRouter does a good job as well, but, PDAnet is a lot more user friendly!
