i think timtlm is on the right track bluetooth + voice calling also drains the battery when plugged into the AC. the unit does get extremely hot so I think it is related to a temperature cutoff

Ok, so I am no longer having this problem since I flashed to Mighty ROM 4.1 from being on Juicy 3.9 -- I'm not sure what mighty has in his ROM that fixed this issue, but I am listening to streaming radio right now while plugged into the wall, and the battery gaining a charge. Also, the phone isn't very hot either.
