Re: Remote Desktop on Diamond
I have a feeling that Vista Home Premium doesn't allow Remote Desktop, but it does allow for Remote Assistance...what are the differences, not sure. The differences are listed here:

Re: Remote Desktop on Diamond
i finally got this working. it took me forever and i've setup remote desktop before using xp and vista. but for some reason Terminal Services was not started and thus my computer was not listening on port 3389. it was driving me crazy because i knew i setup my router correctly and i couldn't even connect via wi-fi on the same network.
anyway, it's up and running and using 16-bit color and fit to screen is great. i'm pleased at just how fast and responsive it is even over evdo. it just looks great.

Re: Remote Desktop on Diamond
Sorry I forgot to mention one of the most important steps. If you DO NOT have a Static IP, meaning if your IP Address is 192.168.X.X then you will have to connect your Diamond to the SAME WiFi router of the computer you are trying to remotely control. In other words if you're at home, you will need to connect to your home's WiFi to control your home computer. You CAN NOT use EVDO UNLESS YOU HAVE A STATIC IP (Which is your own IP address that your ISP provides, usually at an extra cost).

so an external ip like 67.184.xxx.xxx is different from a static ip? I thought that was my personal ip? i'm about to give up for a lil while... gunna go grab some food, chill out, watch some college football, the come back to this later... thanks for all the help, GREATLY appreciated |

Re: Remote Desktop on Diamond
You will have an ip address with or without static. What a static does it keep it the same all the time. You will be able to remote into a computer if you know the ip address at that moment. But the ip address will change and will kick you out or next time you can't log back in if it changed.

www.dyndns.org is a popular one and most routers will allow you to setup dynamic DNS in them for continual updates and external connectivity. |

Every computer in the business has that Static IP. I want to connect to my desk's computer, it has a Static IP of 66.193.243.107 So in the "Computer" field on my Diamond, I enter in 66.193.243.107 Since this is a Static IP (My OWN personal IP) I can access this from anywhere I have an EVDO connection, not just on my WiFi. 192.168.X.X is a FREE Class C IP Address that the IEEE has given out to everyone for personal home use, thats why it's a Dynamic IP. But again, you HAVE to have a Static IP. Check with your ISP if you are not sure. I'm pretty sure many people here do not have Static IPs because it costs extra. ISP won't just give everyone a Static IP because, frankly, they're aren't that many left to give away unless the IEEE begins to use IPv6...but that won't happen for a while and thats another story. |
