Super dumb question but here goes.

To get into bootloader mode you need to (hold power + vol down + reset).

If I am pressing the power button, (Which I assume is the top button) where is the reset button which I also need to press? I thought the power button and reset button where the same thing.

you should really post this where you quoted it from... but you have to take off the back cover, it's near the bottom on the back.

I thought I had read that was a hard reset and it would reset your phone back to factory default settings. Is that not true?

No, hard reset involves that button with a few others. Just pressing the button under you battery cover will soft reset the device (like rebooting a computer)
