Scratch Protection

What kind of scratch protection do you recommend for the Diamond? I have heard good things about the invisibleShield by zagg but I don't think their diamond size will work with sprint's larger sized diamond.

Re: Scratch Protection

Just use the one it comes with untill Zagg makes one for the CDMA Diamond.

Re: Scratch Protection

I'm glad they are actually including a screen protector with this phone. There were so many people with the Instinct that scratched their phone while they were waiting for their Zagg to come in.

Boxwave has good protectors as well. They need to make one for the CDMA though.

Re: Scratch Protection

Do you think the boxwave screen protector for the touch pro will fit the cdma diamond? From a look at the picture on their site, it appears so (at least when compared to a pic of the gsm diamond).

Re: Scratch Protection

I contacted Zagg about an Invisible Shield for the HTC Touch Diamond. They replied with an email offering me a free one if I send them my device for them to take measurements because they would like to offer it on their site. But I don't want to go that long without my phone. If any of you feel differently you should contact Zagg.

Ask 'em how long it'd take.

I got the same response. Free shield, installation and GROUND return shipping. Sounds like you'll be out of a phone for more than 5 business days.

They have it on the website now just in case you guys missed it.

Re: Scratch Protection

That would be cool if you would have noticed that was the GSM version with the 2nd camera. We need the CDMA version which is not the one on the website. ]

What i did is, I went to Best Buy and noticed the Instinct was the same width as the diamond screen just longer. Also the ear whole matched up. I bought the one for the instinct and traced my OEM screen protector and cut it out. Perfect fit for my screen and it looks awesome. Great feel to it as well.

Re: Scratch Protection

The screen is made from glass right? You'd have to have steel or titanium in your pocket to scratch that up I'd imagine.

Just speaking from experience as I have a Zune 80 with a glass screen for nearly a year now and it hasn't been scratched yet.

ken830 09-25-2008 04:47 AM

Re: Scratch Protection

Yes, the screen has a hardened glass layer, but the touch-sensitive surface (top) layer is definitely not glass.

Resistive touch screens rely on the user to deform one of two conductive/resistive layers into the other one to register an input. This is a physical deformation. That means that the surface layer has to be flexible, which means that it almost certainly is not hardened glass.

Don't get me wrong. As with anything, glass is definitely flexible. But it's not flexible enough at this scale (unless, of course, the glass is made super thin).

I'd be willing to bet that the surface layer is just some sort of "hardened," "scratch-resistant" plastic layer.

Cool, good to know. How do screen protectors affect the sensitivty of the screen however?

Not enough to warrant not using the screen protector and there are registry hacks available to make the screen more reactive anyway.

Re: Scratch Protection

I applied a zagg protector to my screen only on Monday night. It looked decent no real bubbles i could see and let it sit powered off over night. The next morning there were clusters of tiny bubbles around the screen. It said it would take 24-48 hours to cure so I wasn't worried but 3 days later I think they are worse then they were the first morning. It all feels smoooth and with the screen on its kinda hard to see them. Is this normal for a zagg product. Or did I mess up the installtion?

Did you use the spray and squeegee? Where the bubbles around any sides where more air could get in?

Re: Scratch Protection

i used baby shampoo/water and credit card to smooth it out. They are not at the very edge of the screen, but some are around the outside.

BOXWAVE Screen Protectors

I purchased the 3 pack of Clear Touch Crystal screen Protectors by BOXWAVE. Pros:1) Ease of application. Comes with a mini micro fiber cloth and tiny applicator card. Goes on dry. No liquid needed. 2) Perfect fit. 3) No loss of screen sensitivity. At least none that I can perceive. 4) Very clear transparency. 5) Very good customer service although correspondence is done via email. They did email me a phone number after I notified them of my issue but I seem to always get an automated system. Emailing is fine though as I have a record of all my correspondence. Con: 1) Two of the 3 screens protectors have exhibited scratches after only a day of use each. View are very light scratches but you can see them when the backlight is off. you can also feel them with the stylus. I don't keep anything in my pocket that can scratch the protector. I appears that the stylus is causing the scratches as most are on the right side of the protector where I often drag the stylus. I have notified BOXWAVE and they have been very receptive to my issue . They informed me that the protectors should not scratch and that there appears to be a defect with the protectors I have. I opted for the advance replacement and they are mailing me another package of 3. They are charging my credit card and will credit my card back when they receive the defective protectors. I chose this option because I didn't want to wait for them to receive the return before they shipped the replacements. BOXWAVE assured me that this is an isolated issue. Maybe I just had a defective 3 pack. Only time will tell. Other than the scratch issues, this is a very nice product. But the scratch resistance of screen protectors are a very important issue as I don't want to keep getting replacements. I will keep everyone posted.

Cool, thanks for the review man. Keep up updated on how the new batch of screen protectors hold up. You didn't mention it, but I assume they are also easy to take off?

Yes, they are extremely easy to take off yet stay securely on. Also, upon application, no dust gets underneath, and if you have an air bubble that does not flatten out, you just remove and reapply. It only takes a minute to do so.

I did not need to use a credit card or anything to smooth out my bse skin. If you get it wet enough its very easy to apply. I applied skins to both mine and my wifes diamond and they both came out great!

akared 10-29-2008 10:11 AM

Re: Scratch Protection

I ended up exchanging my phone for a new one due to a issue with it locking up and i forgot to take the skin off. It was probably my fault but the screen looked pretty bad a scratch (or at least a line) and little pockets of bubbles that never came out. I think I will try the boxwave one. The one that came with the diamond had a scratch on it before I even put it on. Right now the screen doesnt have anything on it and it looks so much better then when I had the zagg protector on it.

Re: Scratch Protection

The boxwave.com protector actually has 2 pieces of film on it, one on each side to protect IT from scratches. The 2 pieces of film are clearly labeled as to which side goes against the screen. It is actually a well thought out system and the clarity and fit are a thing to be admired, as I previously posted. I am awaiting the new protectors to see if the scratch resistance is better.

Re: Scratch Protection

I have a few questions on Boxwave's:

1. is the one from boxwave full body or just the screen?
2. how's the quality compare to Zagg's?
3. is it fingerprint/grease proof?
3. how well does it fit? Like the HTC stock protector pretty much is the EXACT copy of the screen, including the ear pieve

thanks in advance

Re: Scratch Protection

Update:I received my new 3 pack of Boxwave screen protectors. So far, so good. No scratches after a few hours of use. I had scratches on my other batch of screen protectors by this time. It appears that I probably had a defective pack previously. I will wait and see. I got fingerprints on the sticky side of my first of 3 new protectors so I opened another one. I think all I have to do is run the first one with prints under water. For those of you who decide to purchase some screen protectors from www.boxwave.com be aware not to get fingerprints on the sticky side of the protector while applying. But this should be true with any screen protector.

Re: Scratch Protection

i installed my anti-glare boxwave this morning ... to answer ntony, it is screen only ... the included cleaning cloth was wrinkled, not sure if it was used or not :( ... i was really careful and it went on well first try. i held by the edges to avoid fingerprints and was pretty successful. the earpiece hole is a bit bigger than the actual opening and makes it look not centered but i guess that makes the application of the protector more forgiving ... i am satisfied with my purchase

Re: Scratch Protection

For screen protectors, there is only one way to apply...

Turn on your shower, just hot. Close the door, do not use any exhaust.
Once it is all steamy, go in, clean the phone with a microfiber cloth.
Make sure there are no spots, specs or "crumbs" on the screen. Apply the
protector carefully. The steam will cause larger particulates to drop out of
the air to prevent the dust. I used the stock screen protector and there
are no bubbles at all. If you do have bubbles, but there is no dust in them...
just give it time and they will go away.

Re: Scratch Protection

Update: I received the new batch of detectors and I got fingerprints on the tacky side of 2 of them. I will put on the 3rd protector. Boxwave said I could rinse off the 2 other protectors in water with hand soap and then swing in the air to dry off and try to do this in a dust free environment. I guess I will fly to NASA to do this in a dust free environment. I don' thave my hopes up that this will work but I will try it.

2 Month Follow up:well, it has been almost 2 months and here is the bottomline on the BOXWAVE screen protectors:DO NOT PURCHASE THEM!1) they scratch very easily . they scratch where you mostly use the stylus. In my ccase, tiny scratch on the right side where I drag my stylus. the rest of the protector is fine. The scratches occur within a day or so. You can del them when you drag your stylus. 2) I have almost 2 months experience so I don't post this warning lightly. 3) For $35 for 3 protectors, the scratches should not occur after such a short period of time. 4) Customer service was great but after the scratch issue recurring on the second batch of protectors, they respond to your emails a couple of times and them you don't here from them. 5) when the problem first appeared, BOXWAVE said that I must have a defective batch and they mailed me another set. now with the recommend issue, they say they are scratch resistant NOT scratchproof. I explained that this occurred after only a day or so. they agreed that should not happen. They requested I email them pics of the stylus and of the scratches on the protector. I emailed pics of the stylus but I asked if I can mail the protector back so they can view the scratches because the pics may not show them clearly. That was a week ago and I am awaiting am answer! They also said that the anti glare protectors they sell are a little more scratch resistant than the crystal clear ones I have. Well I don't want the anti glare ones and I would not really want to purchase anything else from this company again anyway as I do not trust the quality of their products and they lack customer service after they see that you are ha hog am ongoing issue which they are probably aware exists with other customers having similar issues. BOXWAVE did say that since I am on my second batch of protectors and having the same issues that it is unlikely I have another defective batch.Well I take that to mean that they are blaming me for their product failure or that they are producing am INFERIOR PRODUCT. I would think they are blaming me. Anyway, order at your own risk. Btw, the scratches are deep enough so that you can feel them when you drag your stylus. I will be looking into other manufacturers.Any suggestions are welcomed. I probably won't even waste my time trying got a refund as they would probably only offer to send some more inferior protectors.

boxwave didn't last 2 months for me. the bottom left corner started to curl upwards slightly after a month. very slightly. but it got a lil more pronounced and then finally enough so it caught on phone pouch taking it in and out and now it's not usable. for what it's worth, i didn't quite the same scratching issue as Biker1 above but i did get antiglare...
