xt garmin ghost
I saw some posts talking about the illness of garmin xt, so decided to download a cab I got from google and install it, when it wouldn't work right I checked around and saw I was supposed to PAY for the software, I'd been had by the evil piracy gods, so I uninstalled the software faster than a 2010 mustang cobra shebly gt500 and was in the process of reflashing anyways, so I flash stock then flash OMJ 21882 sense 2.5 and it asks me if i want to install garmin xt? But OMJ didn't put that stuff in his ROM on december 4th, so I dont get how it knows I had that installed after 2 flashes. I found a garmin xt folder on my internal, and deleted that, seems now it has stopped asking me if I want to install that stuff, but that was still weird, anyone know what that was about?
also, any of you really pay like $100 for that software? that's insane, I could get a bb3380 or put in another benjamin and get a hero or something, why would anyone spend $100 on mobile gps software when you can get turn-by-turn with other free programs? |

how much did you pay for tomtom? and how is tomtom better than lets say google maps navigation or amaze gps or whatever, i mean I just like voice turn by turn, I can't be trying to look at my 2.8" diamond screen while driving in Houston traffic lest I end up dead. |

so doesn't that mean that googlemaps navigation is actually better because you have to DL the map every time you log on (not saved on your phone) and it would be updated more often? (of course they don't have that on wm yet) |

Re: xt garmin ghost
Even though I use google maps most of the time, the biggest problem with google maps is when entering locations without cell reception. Pretty much makes it useless. I never had that issue when trying out the Garmin XT a while back since the maps are preloaded on the internal storage.

Re: xt garmin ghost
OK so why does everyone forget the most important thing about Garmin, you can go offroad whereas IGO and TomTom kinda shows you where you are in connection to the closest road available.
Not sure if Google does offroad so can't comment on that one. |

guess most people don't off road that much, but that's a good point. |
Re: xt garmin ghost
AHHH but they do, not necessarily with their cars but Hiking, rock climbing....it's all the same, you're off the beating track and if you wonder around long enough you can definetely get lost (am I the only one who came across some USELESS trail sings that just had you walking in circles) :-)

well I don't personally know anyone who hikes or rock climbs (anything outside of the rock gym place, that place is kinda cool) so I just assumed most people didn't go hiking and stuff, but I know some people who go hunting/fishing, of course any decent boat has its own GPS |
Re: xt garmin ghost
Or if you go off to say a parking lot it shows that.

Re: xt garmin ghost
I loaded Garmin XT on my Diamond, but hardly ever use it. The reason is that I am with Boost CDMA, which is an offshoot of Sprint, and can therefore use Sprint Navigation for free. The biggie there is that Sprint Navigation gives turn by turn WITH STREET NAME. Garmin does not. Sometimes turnoffs can be confusing because two roads veer to the right or left, so when the spoken instruction gives you the actual street name instead of just "turn right in 200 feet" that can be a time saver. Sprint Navigation is actually the Telenav application, rebranded as a Sprint app.
Not sure about some of the other solutions out there, but Telenav checks current traffic reports and reroutes if necessary (in the event of an accident blocking lanes, for example,) which has been helpful to me already a few times. As for Google Maps, that is not really a turn-by-turn for our Diamonds, right? I don't see where that can compare. Now, AmazeGPS does compare, as it is a free turn-by-turn app, but I find it inferior to both Garmin XT and Sprint Navigation (Telenav.) |

kinda funny to picture some dude sittin in his car goin "damn where am I? lets check out the GPS. holy salmon! I'm in a parking lot" would be a good sprint commercial. how the crud does boost give a sprint app for free but sprint charges $10 a month for the same app? or did you mean they both offer it for free with a data package, because on the sprint site it doesnt say anything about data or no data, it says $10 a month. |

Re: xt garmin ghost
Well I'm on Verizon used to be Alltel and my phone is Alltel so I cannot use any Verizon nav stuff... Point being, I have Garmin on my phone. I have a standalone Garmin in one car, but needed one for my car because I like the interface and usability. I still use Google Maps when I need to look up something quick, but when I'm on the road, the Garmin just works better for turn by turn and it does Google searches and stuff now too. Until Google gives WM a navigation like the Droid has (which may never happen), I like the Garmin. I can't really comment on how Garmin compares to others, but it just happened to be what I chose because my other GPS was Garmin and I really like it.
One thing I really like about it compared to Google Maps specifically is that if you the wrong way for some reason, it tells you and gets you back on track. GM just lets you wander until you can stop and figure out WTF you did lol. I do know that the WM Bing directions follow you and will ask you if you go off track and recalculate your route. You may want to try that as an alternative to GM. It doesn't announce but has kind of more turn by turn I think. |

well i just "chatted" with the rep online and she assured me sprint navigation was free if I have unlimited data, which I do. So the $10 a month seems to be a discount, because if I payed for data usage it would add up to more then $10 a month if I used gps a lot im sure |
