Verizon XV6700 with bluetooth GPS?
 

First I will say, I am a new member on the website as I just received my 6700 today and have been fooling around on it as I am sure most of you guys did the first day you had it and I am learning the ropes of flashing and all that.

To the point: One of the features I want to take advantage of is GPS Navigation. I am constantly in need of this it seems. However, I do not want to pay monthly for the VZNavigator if I can simply get a bluetooth GPS receiver to work. Anyone on here use one that they could recommend and confirm that this service does indeed work with verizon?

I am planning on flashing the phone to the devel4 verizonguy's WM6 and want to use a bluetooth GPS receiver with google maps mobile to guide me around. If you guys could give me a lot more information as to the workability of this on this specific phone I would greatly appreciate it. I wanna know who else uses their XV6700's for navigaton as well and how they work :)

I just got back from Gettysburg, PA and Hagerstown, MD. Used my 6700 with bluetooth GPS and IGuidance 3.01. Worked great. The screen is small but Iguidance has voice prompts which was quite handy. Sorry I am not familiar with the exact setup you propose but I really use mine.

I have just a generic bluetooth gps I picked up on ebay cheap, works just fine. Pair the GPS with the phone, then create a new outgoing com port (make sure you uncheck the "secure" setting). Works with google maps for mobile or with navizon (http://www.navizon.com). I have a copy of mapopolis, which works fine, but I don't use it, the online maps work just fine.

which one did you buy?

I didn't purchase a receiver yet; I wanted to be sure that it would work first and how well so I didn't waste any money beforehand.

Does google maps mobile or navizon have turn-by-turn features? Also, which do you guys prefer or is there another program?

Getting a good reliable gps on my phone has been a task of mine for quite a while.

I just bought an OnCourse BT GPS from ebay for $50 and figured google maps would be all I needed. Well until I tried to go into the mountains and my phone didn't have service. Not to mention google maps isn't really very easy to use when you are driving. So I did a bit more research and found TomTom pda - all the US maps can fit on a 1GB SD - so no cell signal is needed and it has voice prompts. To make it even more fun you can download additional voices so you can even have Mr T and Austin powers tell you how groovy your drive is.

I have used my BT gps with the WM6 builds I found on here and it works great. The setup is a little different then in WM5 though.

The only part that's a little tricky is the initial connection/paring with the gps - but once it works it seems to be very solid.

Just be sure after you pair the GPS and the phone that you create the virtual serial port in the bluetooth setup, otherwise you will just get cannot find GPS. Also set up the external gps - To Do this click connections -> Hardware -> COM0 -> Baud rate 9600 (This may differ depending on your BT GPS device)

$150 for the minimum package for the TomTom is a bit steep (at least $200 with the BT adapter for maps that may become outdated).

At that price, I think VZ Navigator would be a better choice.

Anybody ever tried Smart Streets Version 2 on their 6700?

I checked their site and it doesn't list the XV6700 as a compatable device, but is says the software requires Windows for PPC 2002 or higher

Anybody know any reason it wouldn't work on WM5 and WM6? They are both 100% backwards-compatable with WinPPC2002, aren't they?
