What are the “network adapters” that are listed in the Connections settings?
 

What are the “network adapters” that are listed in the Connections settings and why might one want to monkey with the parameters? I'm assuming that since they're there and can be altered, something useful is to be gained. What functionality can be obtained by changing these?
