"Modem Link" vs. "Internet Sharing" ?
Are these two programs supposed to do the same thing?
I can use the "Modem Link" program to successfully hop on Verizons EVDO and surf via the USB port on my laptop. Is the "Internet Sharing" program just another version of the same program, or am I missing the point again (:silent:)? I'm running Helmi_c's WM6 on a Verizon 6700. Thanks, -PH |
modem link - computer uses the phone as modem (commonly reffered to as PAM) to dial a number and connect to the internet
internet sharing is just as it sounds. The computer shares the internet connection with the phone. both similar in the end result but not the same. Modem link IMO would be faster than internet sharing |
Modem link can be a bit touchy to set up - it requires a com port and drivers, internet sharing just works. From my experience internet sharing is easier to use, and gets better performance.

just tested
i just tested both of them and the internet sharing seems to be alittle better than modem link
i have verizon down in south east texas and on testmy.net i was getting 479 kbs with internet sharing and 234 with modem link i hope this could give some type help. or if someone is getting better speeds then let me know to. |
internet sharing is by far soo easy to get running real quick.
dunno if its faster though as far as browsing on the recieving computer. |
Yeah I just got a brand new labtop and I couldnt use my phone as a modem with the modem link. Im sure it was user error meaning me. Cause I couldnt find the drivers or whatever. But with the internet sharing it was a breeze for me really easy to set up. Im actually posting this note using my labtop while using the EVDO from that good Verizon Wireless network as my 6700 is linked to the labtop.

With Modem Link, I'm using the EVDO on the phone as my modem to the internet. I have that working and can see myself using it while stuck in an airport (an all too common occurrence for me).
Does "Internet Sharing" use the laptops internet (hardwire or wifi) connection to allow the phone access to the 'net? I'm still missing the point here. Thanks for the help, -PH |
Yes, you are still missing the point.
The Internet Sharing app does the same thing as Modem Link (and Wmodem) apps, but instead of making the phone look like a modem device on the PC, it makes it look like a network card. |
money
do you have to pay extra to use you phone as a modem via internet sharing because I called sprint and asked when I had my a900 and they said you had to pay per bit for phone as modem is this also true with the 6700 if you already have unlimited data?

My WModem works fine, but Internet Sharing does not. I run the Internet Sharing application and it dials says "connected", but my laptop just continues to attempt acquire a network address and then eventually says limited or no connectivity. Any thoughts or suggestions? Oh, and Modem Link works fine too, same as WModem.
