Newbee
I have been watching and reading this forum for a LONG time because I have a Verizon Audiovox VX6700 and I am still suffering with the original software.
On this site, I notice there are many flavors of the ROM available and now that I have my confidence up, I think I would like to try loading a new ROM. The question is which? I have a reasonable amount of software experience because Ive been working with PC systems since the old S100 bus days when computers had 16k of memory (yes "K" not megs). The phone is a little foreign to me as a sofware base, but I am interested in trying. So, I see that the WM6 version is there and also a "clean" version of WM5. I am asking for a little guidence here. What recommendations do you have? Here is what I use my phone for: Phone calls voice dialing using MS newest software (1.6) Simple excel and word files MS maps (keep copies on the SD card) Notes on all sorts of things Playing mp3s (I listen to books mostly) want to use bluetooth head phones (cant right now) use contacts from my PC upload and download small files from my PC Basically I treat my phone as a PDA Use the phone to connect to the internet via wireless I do get email form 2 sources (hotmail and insight accounts) I do NOT use verizons data service! What recommendations do you have? |
Ok so i had the stock verizon rom that came w/ the phone and the first rom update i did was WM6. I use my phone for:
Calls, internet, Word, e-mail, music, movies, notes, So depending on wat u do, u'll really like WM6 or u might just like one of the other AKU rom updates. But the good thing is, if u do'nt like WM6 u can always download another rom and flash ur phone to that rom. I for one love the WM6 makes my phone run a lot faster |
lbelardinelli,
Judging by the very simple needs you've listed, you will do very well with any of the roms based on Helmi's latest (R4) WM5 kitchen. Examples include Jeff Kirvin's clean and simple (available on the ppcgeeks ftp), Phoenix's clean and simple (on his thread), and the Colonel's latest (also on the ftp I think). Or you could download the kitchen yourself and create your own bare-bones rom. One thing I've learned from using others' roms is you never know what you're missing until you try a few out.... Re. WM6, Helmi's release is absolutely fantastic (I understand), but there are still some minor bugs being worked out. Specifically, if you use WPA-PSK security for WiFi network connections, then you may want to hold off of this for a little while. |
