Battery Life vs EVDO/1X/Hybrid
I just noticed that there are settings that I've never play with on :
- Phone - Menu - Options - Services - (scroll down to) Mode of Operation - Get Settings There are 3 options : - Hybrid (I assume with this one our phone can user Both EVDO & 1X whenever is available). - EVDO Only (only use EVDO, what if there is no EVDO coverage on the area, no incoming & outgoing phone calls ?). - 1X Only (only use 1X, so NO data connection at all). Since on XV6700 our biggest weakness is the battery life, today I'm setting up the mode to 1X, so no data connection for me today and will see how my battery will perform without doing any data connection and/or signals changes from EV/1X. Kind of remind me of our old Tri-mode CDMA phone, only run on 1X mode and the battery can last 2-3 days on normal use ( +/- 30 minutes phone usage a day & some text messaging). Anybody tried this ?, I mean for the sake of battery life while sacrificing Data Connection (EVDO). |
1x means s-l-o-w data, not no data...
1x will still do a data connect, only at low speed...
I would guess power usage is greater when in 1x than in EVDO if you do any data connections... (You are connected longer to download the same amount of data with additional overhead, so use up more power than if you downloaded the same data at high speed...) I'm not sure if you will see a difference in power usage if you don't use data... I would also turn off ROAMING as that seems to suck life out of my phone... (Of course, it could be the data roaming at 1x doing it...) |
Just a heads-up/warning as lots of people have made this mistake before:
Setting to "EVDO Only" will disable incoming phone calls and SMS (outgoing will still work though). I've used that mode once or twice on purpose as a sort of "do not disturb" setting when I didn't want incoming calls to interrupt a data session. But just keep in mind that is the consequence to putting it in that mode. For most people most of the time "Automatic" is the correct mode, as the phone will try to always choose EV if it's available and will revert to 1x in all other cases (as well as for phone calls and SMS, which can't travel on the EV-DO network). For people in marginal signal locations, "1x Only" is sometimes the best mode, as otherwise the phone constantly tries to switch to an EVDO signal that is really not strong enough for the phone to actually use--resulting in a ping-pong game between the two towers which runs down the battery like crazy. |
Ding, we have a winner. I can now spend the day at work without needing to recharge at lunch and on my ride home. :)

in phone settings i dont have these options
any reg hack to enable? |
Missing 'Mode of Operation'
I'm missing the mode of operation on my phone as well. Anyway to bring it up?

Same problem here, Missing Mode of Operation
|
I'm sure the missing mode of operation is due to it being a vzw rom, not a generic one (mine is as well and hopefully a reg hack will appear ;)
Actually - as mentioned, EV only will kill all calls (data only), 1x only in general may use more due to d/l speeds, BUT - if you are in a weak signal area, your phone will constantly hunt between EV and 1x and use a LOT of battery. I work in an old concrete type building and it kills my battery quickly... though the increase in signal with 1.41 and 1.43 has definitely helped. |
anyone know how to get this mode of operations on our phones?
