Broken USB port. What to do?

I can get it to charge and sync 1 out of 10 tries. But I'm sure it will fail completely by tomorrow. I need to take it back to the Verizon store. However I have a custom ROM on it. Will I be fine, or do I need to go back to the OEM rom? If so can someone please tell me how to locate the Verizon OEM ROM.

Thanks in advance!

Common sense dictates you need to put the verizon rom back on it. Verizon is not okay with you putting anything but their own sanctioned ROMs on the thing. If they see a custom ROM they're likely to tell you you caused the problem yourself.

Thanks for the response but that was not helpful in any way. I've been with Verizon for a long time and have had problems with many phones that I've changed the software on. However this is a hardware issue. Like I said the USB port is "broken" physically. I guess I should have been more clear for you.

Does anyone know where I can find Verizon's OEM ROM? I would really appreciate it. I've searched but have only found Sprints.

Thanks!

Yes it was helpful... you asked if you should flash on the stock verizon rom before bringing it in for service and I said of course you should.

Regardless of whether the problem is hardware or not verizon can use the fact that you have a hacked rom on there as an excuse to deny you any repair/replacement at all.

Sort of like those stickers you sometimes see on electronics that say "removal or tampering with this sticker will invalidate your warranty"--it's like that. Verizon does not want you using a ROM they didn't make and if you bring it in like that they may hand it back to you and say "sorry we won't support this anymore".

Why even take the risk? Put the stock ROM back on and then you don't have to worry.

You can find all carrier roms at www.utstar.com

Thank you luv2chill, you may not agree but that was a lot more helpful for me. Anyway I appreciate your help.

FYI,

After I went to download Verizon's OEM ROM I hooked my phone up to the pc and nothing happened. It seems the port was pretty much dead. Anyway I kept trying until I received the following pop-up, "There was a power surge in the USB device". The phone was now completely dead.

I took it to Verizon today and they couldn't turn it on so they gave me a new, (refurb), one. Gotta love the warranty. I think the cradle caused most my problems.

Bad cradle design?

Compared to IPAC and Axim cradles, this is a pretty crappy cradle design, and it seems obvious to me that it is responsible for the rash of charge port failures on these devices. The stock cradle seems to support the entire device from the USB port. This puts alot of stress on the port especially if you use the device - pushing buttons or using the stylus - while in the cradle. The only reason I still use it is because I need the battery charger and I like the way it holds the screen up when syncing with the desktop. Anyone know of a decent aftermarket cradle for 6700s?

Here is a nice cradle from Utstarcom themselves....

To add onto the subject of broken usb, I found by looking into the port, I can see the pin on the far left noy centered with the rest. I take a needle and apply pressure upward and this gives me a sure shot of usage. for now I have do this almost everytime I want to charge up.

otherwise I would be rapeing my ppc trying to find its sweet spot ;)

A long time ago my brother had a Nokia candy bar phone which Verizon sold custom colored faceplates for in the store. Well my brothers battery was defective and would not hold a charge, so he took it in for replacement. He had painted the removable faceplate himself, and they told him they could not guarantee the battery because he had painted the faceplate and that voided the warranty. They even flagged it on his account, we tried to go back a few weeks later with a stock faceplate to another store, and the guy gave him shit about it, but eventually gave in after we started raising hell.

I hate Verizon...

My USB port is also broken, to charge, I have to pull up on the cord to get juice.

Re: Broken USB port. What to do?

you could always try to resolder your usb port back on, i did it twice and it worked. just becarefully that you like up all the pins before you set the solder, i would suggest using some glue to hold it in place once you line up the pins. here is a site for to help take it apart http://www.bellybuttonporn.com/wiki/...ur_PPC/XV_6700
