Modders and Etiquette

Some of you may have noticed that Jeff Kirvin, the author of the fantastic “clean and simple” 3.5 ROM, has decided to get out of the ROM building business because he’s been receiving threatening and harassing emails from a downloader who is having problems. Per Jeff, he has pointed this user at the stock ROM, but the user refuses to cooperate and is continuing the email assault.

Perhaps this event is a good stimulus to discuss the etiquette associated with using a site such as this. Here’s a cut at a few simple rules:

1. Anything you download from this site is done at your own risk. There is no guarantee that anything will work; if you don’t want to take the risk associated with possibly bricking your phone, don’t download anything.

2. All of the modders here provide their work absolutely free and without warranty or support requirements of any kind. They invest their precious spare time to build ROMs and tools that vastly improve the performance of our phones. They are under no obligation whatsoever to give you the time of day, much less handholding.

3. This is a community, not a business. If we all play nice in the sandbox, we can have a pretty good time. If you contribute, compliment, and cooperate, we can keep modders interested and involved. Constructive feedback helps us and the modders. Harrassment and whining just makes you a turd in the punchbowl.

Personally, I believe my phone has been vastly improved by the information and downloads I’ve received from this site. If modders are willing to share their work with us, we owe them our gratitude and respect.

Well Stated!

As someone who has benefited greatly from the hard work of everyone who has contributed to this site - I cannot agree more. We need to show respect to Jeff and everyone one else who have made it possible for us to see how great the 6700 can be.

Let's not bite the hand that feeds!

I agree! I couldnt possibly be more happy with the vast amount of knowledge I have received from everyone here. I am only starting to contribute, and even though its small, I am glad to be able to give something back. I could not even start to imagine how complex the process of ROM building is; I just am thankful for the results of those who do.

I'm really disappointed that some one would send threatening emails. People must understand that altering their device in any way is done 100% at their own risk. This is not tech support for people who don't know what their doing. Before you flash a device do your research. People give of themselves freely here and no one has to help anyone.
This is not to say we don't help one another because believe me I have received some excellent help from a hand full of people.

Why would anyone use someone elses rom? The strength of this project is the Kitchen and the ability to create your OWN rom.

Seriously, if you don;t have enough skill to do something as simple as creating a rom with this Kitchen (with focus takes less than an hour) you have no business re-flashing your phone with anythig but the stock rom. That shiny iPhone has your name all over it...

Then to use someone else's rom and complain is laughable, if it wasnt so fn sad...

Jeff Kirvin 07-29-2007 08:57 PM

I know, I've said several times that people can make their own C&S ROM with the new kitchen. All you have to do is uncheck most of the boxes...

Jeff Kirvin 07-29-2007 09:00 PM

But seriously, folks...

All the C&S project ever did was apply the "Zen of Palm" to Windows Mobile. I removed all the stuff you don't really need, added a bare minimum of utilities that filled in gaps left by Microsoft (really, no registry editor?), tuned a few oddly set registry entries and left everything else bloody well alone.

I use Kirvin C+S, and because of it they can have my 6700 when they pry it from my cold dead hands.

The things I have learned from this site have not only made my phone stable, but also fun. I am in the process of moving but when I get settled my main goal will be to cook some of my own roms. I love the C+S, but of course there are some things I add after, so why not cook my own?

Kirvin, I appreciate your rom, but also I appreciate that you are not making another. This "forces" me to do what I should have done a long time ago and learned to cook my own rom.

The fact that every one on this site does what they do for the benefit of the community, and they do it for free is wonderful. Keep up the good work people.

To every one here who makes my life easier (Ok, that is everyone)
My many Thanks

I agree

Well I just wrote this really great rant about those who can't take it to sell their 6700's and buy 2 cans and some string. and I got an error when i posted it. But the moral is the same. Hats off to those who even bother to take their time out to help a geek like me and I look forward to all the vast information I will recieve in the future. thanks agan guys.

Are you sure the person harassing him isn't Omega 1 Calc Lite? I saw a post on the PDAPHONEHOME board where they were pretty pissed about him including the calc in the ROM as "free".
