With all of the expertise here on these forums I was curious after reading about another Linux based open source phone being released why we arent going this diirection with the Apache instead of the propietary Windows Mobile platform? Wouldnt it be easier?

At one time I actually thought MS had our interests in mind but after years of watching the extreme corporate greed displayed by MS Ive come to realize that was never the case and so Openmoko becomes one of our few options for an open source phone.

I believe the biggest reason is application support for our devices is extremely small when compared to the number of WM applications available. That and we can now just about tweak every aspect of the WM OS to our heart's content with WM as it is.

That and a boat load of people are more familiar with windows than Linux. hence makes it more comfortable for them to program and play with. Also a point of having to write new drivers or emulators for all the special hardware functions probably isn't the most fun either.

Someone did boot the 6700 with linux, but nothing has been done beyond that. I believe there was some information about it on shadowmite's website.

So is OpenMoko available for download? I tried their web site but couldn't find any reference to download. I love Linux, I first ran Linux on version 3.2 I think, way back when!!

I don't believe it is OpenMoko, but some other Linux distro.

OpenMoko is available as a developer's toolkit (I think they call it a lunchbox). It includes some dev hardware to make it useful.

Proprietary chips for the Apache CDMA radio make it a daunting task to even start making drivers for it. That's why OpenMoko is implemented as open hardware as well as open software.

I don't know of any other truly open phones.

..just run windows 3.1 on it...hehehe

Your point about everyone feeling more comfortable with Windows as opposed to Linux probably still holds true. Does everyone here still feel the same as they did about it when the thread was opened?
